Job Description:

We are looking for an Accounting Manager to help strengthen our organization and provide leadership for the general ledger team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting, financial management, and a proactive attitude to ensure the financial stability and growth of the company. The Accounting Manager will play a crucial role in managing our financial records, supporting budgeting, and ensuring compliance with accounting guidelines. Reporting to the Controller, the Accounting Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the accounting department.

The Accounting Manager will lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes and ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial data.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of general accounting, including analysis, reconciliation, journal entries, and the month-end close process.
  • Enforce proper accounting in accordance with US GAAP, as well as with corporate policies and principles.
  • Develop and lead processes to ensure timely, accurate, and efficient accounting of month-end, quarterly, and year-end close procedures.
  • Develop, mentor, and support the growth of individuals within the general ledger team through effective goal-setting, delegation, and communication.
  • Perform account reconciliation review and analysis to ensure compliance with GAAP and BGMP corporate policies/procedures to ensure accuracy of balances, timeliness of Journal entries, and completion of all account reconciliations.
  • Assess, implement, and monitor all internal control practices, including the accuracy of the NetSuite accounting software and connections with related sub-ledger systems, as well as collaboration with departments across the organization to ensure compliance with policies and procedures, such as those related to timekeeping, expense reimbursement, and corporate card usage.
  • Monitor and analyze accounting data and produce financial reports and statements.
  • Establish and maintain financial records in accordance with US GAAP and compliance with internal controls.
  • Ensure proper revenue recognition of complex multi-element activities, including revenue models related to advertising and subscriptions.
  • Monitor revenue and expenses, consolidating and analyzing financial data and preparing special reports to ensure the company’s financial health.
  • Lead and participate in efforts to continually improve financial systems and related procedures.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support business initiatives and provide financial insights.
  • Standardize documentation for technical accounting topics and policies related to revenue recognition, expense and fixed asset capitalization, and grants/contributions.
  • Establish and maintain fiscal files and records to document transactions.
  • Provide ad hoc financial reports or related support, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Proven working experience as an Accounting Manager, Accounting Supervisor, or Finance
    Manager.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting principles, as well as related practices, standards,
    laws, and regulations, with proven hands-on technical and operational accounting experience.
  • Proven leadership skills inspiring great results with a positive attitude in a fast-paced, team environment, with the ability to influence, train, and mentor staff to achieve objectives.
  • Demonstrated commercially minded professional with strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Established self-starter with experience working in a hands-on environment who is able to prioritize workload and provide solutions that consider and incorporate complex structures, systems, and processes.
  • Experience identifying areas for improvement and implementing more effective and efficient processes and strategies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • 5 to 8 years of progressive accounting experience, including a minimum of 3 years of management experience.
  • Ability to work in a results-oriented, team environment, prioritizing projects and delivering quality results within tight time constraints.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Experienced, confident presenter to all audiences.
  • Ability to prioritize and to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, managing several projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of an extended, cross-functional team.
  • Experience supervising accounting staff, conducting performance evaluations, and identifying training needs for employees.
  • Experience in the media industry a strong plus.
  • BA/BS and CPA preferred.
  • Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint required.
  • Experience with NetSuite preferred.
  • Big 4 Public Accounting experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in subscription and advertising business a plus.
  • Experience with US and foreign tax compliance and regulations preferred.

The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.
