Harrison Gray has partnered with a workforce development agency who is looking for an Accounting Manager. The client is in West Michigan and partners with employers, educators, economic developers, and community organizations to provide workforce solutions.
Job Summary:
The Accounting Manager coordinates and supervises the detailed operations of the organizations accounting functions including coordination of accounting systems, policies and procedures, internal audits, and financial reports. Responsibilities are carried out directly, and through supervision of assigned staff, with wide latitude for initiative and independent judgment. Assignments are received from an administrative superior who reviews work via conferences, reports, and observation of results achieved.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Coordinate agency audits including review of staff prepared workpapers and act as the contact with auditors during fieldwork.
- Perform internal audits of transactions, procedures, and records to ensure accuracy of general ledger.
- Maintain agency cost allocation plan including labor distributions, Prepare allocation of monthly cost pools.
- Perform detailed review and posting of the fiscal transactions for the organization, including accounts payable, cash receipts, payroll and journal entries.
- Monitor overall cash balance to ensure that sufficient funds are available to meet current obligations, contractors requests for payments, payroll, and operating expenses for agency. Calculate anticipated cash draw needs and certify cash requests to state agencies.
- Coordinate and participate in the maintenance of automated accounting records, journals, and ledgers.
- Monitor expenditures and prepare both routine and special reports as necessary; review and coordinate the preparation of fund reports and certify for submission to State agencies.
- Review and process bank transfer requests.
- Supervise staff, assign work, and provide guidance and direction; evaluate employee performance and assess need for training.
- Actively participate in continuous quality improvement processes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications:
- Knowledge normally acquired through a Bachelors Degree in Accounting, and four to six years of accounting experience with governmental, nonprofit, or other community service agencies preferred.
- Supervisory skills necessary to effectively manage the daily operations and administration of the accounting department.
- Computer skills necessary to effectively utilize accounting software, word processing, database, and spreadsheet software applications.
- Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of public administration and the principles of accounting.
- Thorough knowledge of management procedures and methods as related to program reporting, accounting and related information systems and processes.
- Ability to apply analytical skills in evaluating agency operations and in identifying operational problems and potential solutions.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate in both oral and written form with prior experience in public speaking.
- Communication and organizational skills that contribute to a quality work environment and the ability to work as a team.
- Planning and time management skills with the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
- Mental ability to frequently handle pressures related to meeting deadlines, fulfilling scheduling requirements and attention to detail on figures, documents and data.
- Physical ability to frequently sit in one position for extended periods of time. The incumbent may experience visual strain associated with the frequent and prolonged viewing of a computer screen.
Working Conditions:
- Normal office environment with little discomfort due to noise, dirt, dust and the like.
- Local travel may occasionally be required.
