POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Accounting Specialist Department: Accounting/Finance

Position Reports To: Accounting Manager

POSITION PURPOSE
Responsible for analyzing and reconciling detailed general ledger accounts and daily Teller work as assigned. Keeps records and accounts accurate and current. Researches and resolves outages, discrepancies, and accounting errors. Completes related Branch and Teller reports, summaries, and records. Performs clerical duties and assists with accounting functions as required.
NATURE AND SCOPE
Incumbent works within well-defined procedures. This position requires good organizational skills and a general knowledge of basic accounting principles. Timeliness, efficiency, accuracy, attention to detail, and good accounting skills are required to successfully execute this position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES
1. Assumes responsibility for accurate and timely completion of assigned accounting functions.
a. Reviews source documents and records daily transactions. Balances and posts daily write-ups and journals.
b. Computes figures and prepares recurring account statements.
c. Posts corrections, adjustments, and other transactions to the appropriate general ledger account.
d. Completes daily balancing and ATM consolidation reports.
e. Reconciles general ledger accounts as assigned.
f. Completes required records and reports and maintains files.
g. Prepares monthly reconciliation of all Credit Union fixed assets and prepaid accounts.
h. Completes accounting functions in accordance with established policies and procedures, including Bank Secrecy Act.
2. Assumes responsibility for effectively researching, tracking, and resolving accounting problems and discrepancies.
3. Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective communication and coordination with area personnel and with management.
a. Maintains regular contact with other departments to obtain information and/or to correct transactions.
b. Assists accounting personnel as needed.
c. Keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant problems. Reports the status of all account reconciliations to the Accounting Manager on a monthly basis.
d. Attends and participates in meetings as required.
4. Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.
a. Keeps work area clean, secure, and well maintained.
b. Completes special projects as assigned.
PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS
1. Accounting documents, records, and reports are accurate, current, and timely.
2. Accounting errors or discrepancies are promptly discovered and resolved (or referred).
3. Daily Teller work is accurately balanced and reconciled.
4. Good communication and coordination exist with Credit Union personnel. Assistance and support are provided as needed.
5. Management is appropriately informed of area activities.
6. Accounting functions are completed in accordance with established standards, policies, and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification: High school graduate or equivalent.
Additional accounting coursework very helpful.
Required Knowledge: Knowledge of basic accounting concepts and procedures including account reconciliation.
Knowledge of related computer applications.
Understanding of the Federal Reserve Banking System.
Experience Required: One year to three years of similar or related experience. Previous Credit Union or financial institution experience very helpful.
Skills/Abilities: Well organized and detail-oriented.
Good math skills.
Attentive to detail and accurate.
Cooperative and willing to assist others.
Able to use PC, calculator, and other basic business machines.

Talking: Especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
Average Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.
Repetitive Motion: Movements frequently and regularly required using the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
Average Visual Abilities: Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products, or operate machinery.
Physical Strength: Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Exerts up to 10 lbs of force occasionally. (Almost all office jobs.)
WORKING CONDITIONS
None: No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions (such as in a typical office).
MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION
Reasoning Ability: Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.
Able to interpret various instructions.
Mathematics Ability: Ability to perform basic math skills and to use decimals to compute ratios and percents, and to draw and interpret graphs.
Language Ability: Ability to read a variety of books, magazines, instruction manuals, atlases, and encyclopedias.
Ability to prepare memos, reports, and essays using proper punctuation, spelling and grammar.
Ability to communicate distinctly with appropriate pauses and emphasis; correct pronunciation (or sign equivalent) and variation in word order; using present, perfect, and future tenses.
