The Opportunity

This position is responsible for overseeing and managing the Investment Accounting department activities, its staff members and also providing technical accounting expertise related to such critical areas as: (i) financial reporting activities, (ii) technical investment accounting (iii) researching of accounting guidance and (iv) special project work.
The position’s responsibilities, as outlined below, require knowledge and abilities in the following areas: ability to manage and direct staff, ability to communicate with third-party service provider and internal customers, problem solving, management level communication, accounting research, development of accounting policies, financial analysis, understanding of tax related issues and guidance as they relate to investments, investment accounting processes, special project work and the ability to resolve technical accounting issues.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure accurate and timely compilation of investment accounting information, analysis and reporting in accordance with IFRS, GAAP and STAT accounting principles.
- Oversee and manage the Investment Accounting financial processing and reporting for Investment Accounting at the US Shared Services Company.
- Analyze, research and document complex investment transactions or new accounting standards.
- Coordinate and maintain strong relationships with Internal Asset Managers and third-party accounting service provider.
- Oversee and manage month-end, quarter-end and year-end accounting close and reporting for investment accounting. Activities performed include the preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations and reporting to internal stakeholders.
- Manage the daily activities of the investment accounting team. Apply performance management practices, including continuous conversation to evaluate employee performance. Actively identify training opportunities to grow skills across the team.
- Manage and produce investment reporting schedules and disclosures for the STAT and GAAP quarterly and annual statements.
- Responsible for ensuring investment accounting processes are properly documented as to policies, procedures, and controls.
- Lead or provide support for special project work as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from a four-year college or university
- Clear knowledge and proven abilities in investment accounting and a minimum of 10+ years of accounting experience, preferably investment accounting or analysis in an insurance environment
- 3+ years of supervisory experience required
- Excellent analytical, problem solving and written/verbal communication skills with an ability to interact and present to Senior Management.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage, prioritize and effectively meet deadlines for multiple assignments simultaneously.
- Public Accounting Firm experience is a plus
- Proficient PC skills, particularly in Excel, Access and Word. Experience with SAP financial systems, IBM Cognos TM1 and investment software preferred (i.e. PAM, Aladdin)
- CPA required. Insurance specific designation a plus (e.g., CPCU, ARe)
