Position: F/T Aquatics Coordinator Salary: $18.00

The Y will provide lifeguard/CPR-AED certification classes.

About the Job

The YMCA Alexandria is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and passionate leader to join our team as the Aquatics Coordinator. In this role, you will be assisting the Aquatics Director and Assistant Aquatics Director in creating, implementing, and supervising our aquatics activities, programs, and staff. Some of the exciting tasks you will do as the Aquatics Coordinator include but are not limited to:

This position assists in all aspects of aquatic staffing to include recruiting, training, development, indirect supervision, education and certifications, and team building.

Insures the smooth operation of the Aquatic Department in scheduling lifeguards, swim instructors, and pool operators.

Trains lifeguards including assisting in the quarterly in-house training sessions.

Daily, weekly, seasonal maintenance of pools and equipment.

Qualifications and Skills:

High school diploma or GED; 18 years or older, current lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid certification.

Pool operator’s license for Alexandria.

Must have 1,500 hours experience including supervision of staff in a work environment.

YMCA lifeguard trainer within 6 months of hire.

CPR/AED and first aid trainer within 6 months of hire.

Applicants must be flexible and able to work some evenings, weekends and holidays.

Working Conditions:

Must be able to do heavy lifting – equipment, people, and chemicals.

Must be able to lift and move around objects of 40 pounds or more.

Must be able to climb and use a variety of aquatic and cleaning equipment.

Must have mechanical aptitude and strong problem-solving skills.

Must have the physical ability to meet all prerequisites for YMCA Lifeguarding.

Tread water for two minutes. (Legs only)

Retrieve training victim from bottom deep end.

Active victim rescue with tube.

Passive victim rescue with tube.

Backboard victim.

Ability to see and hear participants in distress or asking for assistance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Instructs minimum of 20 hours per week of individual and group swim lessons.

Contacts members to schedule swim lessons.

Provides high level of safety, instruction and services for participants and families.

Ensures adequate safety procedures are in place for the class being taught.

Develops lesson plans for each class of the session including lesson plans for substitutes if needed.

Keeps skill sheets, student progress records and attendance records up to date after each class meeting.

Prepares student evaluations, with recommendations and comments for either staying in the current level, with an explanation why, or movement to the next level.

Creates a positive environment that encourages and supports all participants.

Aquatics Leadership:

Plan and implement aquatics camps.

Lead trainings for aquatics team members in First Aid/CPR/AED/Lifeguard courses.

Plan and implement aquatics programs.

Membership:

Provide prospective members with tours and information.

Enroll new members in the Y.

Welcome new members and provide information at reception area.

Administration:

Serve as Manager on Duty.

Create and manage marketing materials for branch programming.

Create and facilitate community events (i.e. Health Kids Day, Read Across America, Health Fairs, etc).

Other duties as required.

Education, Certification, Skills, and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED.

Must be 18 years old.

Current lifeguard certifications.

Certified in CPR Pro.

Certified in First Aid.

YMCA V6 Swim Instructor Certification.

YMCA V6 Swim Instructor Trainer Certification within 6 months of hire.

Must meet all the essential functions of a lifeguard.

Must be able to work a flexible schedule.

Minimum four (4) years progressively responsible experience in aquatics programming.

Certified trainer for First Aid/CPR/AED/Lifeguard.

Must have strong organizational and administrative skills.

Must understand and be committed to working with diverse population and to YMCA character development. Professional demeanor. Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated maturity, good judgment, and excellent human relations skills.

Working Conditions:

Ability to drive from branch to branch.

Ability to work at any location to complete tasks and assignments.

Available for early morning, evening and weekend events/programs.
