Position Summary
The expanded duties Dental Assistant has the same responsibilities as the regular Dental Assistant unless scheduled to
function as a provider. When working as a provider, the primary responsibilities are coronal polishing and placement of
dental sealants for the scheduled patients. When the Dental Assistant doesn't have a patient, they are expected to
help, as needed, with all tasks of the regular Dental Assistant and other staff.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities*
As a Provider:
1. Open the clinic: Turn on computers, units, pump and compressor.
2. Set up treatment room for scheduled patients.
3. Provide coronal polishing and sealants for scheduled patients.
4. Provide oral hygiene instructions to scheduled patients.
5. Have dentist perform exam on scheduled patients.
6. Take and develop x-rays, as prescribed by the dentist.
7. Make entries in the patient chart of procedures performed.
8. Escort the patient to the receptionist. If no receptionist is present, finish the check-out process.
9. Clean up the treatment room and set up for the next patient.
10. If no patient is present for the Dental Assistant, help other staff as needed.
As a Dental Assistant:
1. Open the clinic: Turn on computers, units, pump and compressor.
2. Set up the treatment room and seat patients.
3. Assist the dentist with patient care.
4. Process and sterilize instruments between patients.
5. Take and develop x-rays, as prescribed by the dentist.
6. Take impressions, as prescribed by the dentist.
7. Pour up impressions with model plaster, as needed.
8. Escort the patient to the receptionist. If no receptionist is present, finish the patient check-out process.
9. Clean up the treatment room and set up for the next patient.
10. Perform equipment maintenance procedures.
11. Keep all supplies stocked.
12. Clean the dental department as needed.
13. Assist registration representative with recording patient failed appointments in patient charts.
14. Assist registration representative with printing the patient schedule for the next day.
15. Assist registration representative with pulling patient charts for the next day.
16. Assist registration representative with filing patient charts at the end of the day.
17. Assist registration representative with appointment confirmation phone calls.
18. Perform other duties as assigned by the Dental Director.
19. Close the clinic: Turn off computers, units, pump, compressor and x-ray developer.
20. Maintain inventory of supplies and order dental and office supplies.

1. Requires experience and demonstrated abilities for working in a multi-cultural setting.
2. Ability to strongly embrace and personify the mission of the Lawndale Christian Health Center.

Required Knowledge, Experience, or Licensure/Registration
1. Obtain certification needed for functioning as an expanded duties dental assistant.
2. High school diploma or equivalent.
