As a member of the USC Gould School of Laws Graduate & International Programs office, our Instructional Designer will be adept at instructional and program design and will have expertise in developing and supporting online courses. This person will be responsible for assisting our faculty with the design of their online courses. They will apply their experience with sound instructional practices, the development of learning resources, and the delivery of courses via online delivery methods. They will have an in-depth understanding of online course platforms, instructional software, multimedia applications, and web-based educational technologies.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in instructional design, educational technology, or related fields. A Master of Education in Learning Design and Technology or a similar graduate degree in instructional design or educational technology preferred.
Experience: 2 years of experience working in instructional design in higher education or a corporate environment is required, and 3 to 5 years of experience working in instructional design is preferred.
Field of Expertise: Directly related experience supporting educational technology and/or hybrid and online teaching in a university or corporate environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and outstanding organizational abilities. Strong analytical, collaboration and negotiation skills. Knowledgeable about new teaching and media technologies in online education and instructional design and emerging trends.
Job Accountabilities:
Demonstrate expertise with instructional design methodologies, pedagogical issues, and best practices for online learning within a higher education environment.
Design and build new online courses to complement our online library.
Develop learning objectives and align content, activities, and assessments to those objectives.
Directly support faculty and teaching staff in creating and designing instructional materials and instructional strategies while incorporating best practices and sound pedagogy. Assist them in creating effective, engaging, and innovative online course delivery. Develop recommended learning paths and content for faculty as needed.
Deliver engaging and effective instructional content by applying a strong instructional point of view and demonstrating technical proficiency in educational technology tools, media editing or creation tools, and learning management systems. Must also possess the ability to learn and assess emerging technology and trends in the use and effectiveness of educational technology and learning.
Design, create and revise course documents and instructional-support materials.
Lead and oversee the day-to-day operation of the learning management system and vendor services. This includes monitoring system performance, utilization, and system configurations to ensure uninterrupted operations and proper access for end users. Identify and resolve technical problems related to the learning management system, including error messages, login difficulties, integration problems, and other system issues affecting end users. Provide support via phone, email, and/or in person. Maintain existing shells to ensure proper functionality, user accounts, access, roles, and user privileges.
Demonstrate skills in project management of learning development projects involving eLearning authoring, media production, learning object development, etc. Must possess the ability to work both collaboratively with a team and independently to establish and manage shifting priorities.
Demonstrate fluency using and training users on learning management system platforms, including Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, and Brightspace D2L.
Demonstrate strong knowledge and the application of accessibility best practices per W3C WAI guidelines and specifications (WCAG, WI-ARIA, etc.), Section 508, and other evolving accessibility standards as related to instructional materials.
Demonstrate ability to work collaboratively with all members of a learning team, faculty, and program staff to create a learning environment that is service-oriented, supportive, engaging and effective for adult learners.
Performs official review of online courses and other instructional materials to recommend revisions that are in accordance with best practices and other standards.
Assists with on-campus exam administration and/or proctoring each semester and with on-campus Orientation, Commencement, and other departmental and law school activities each year.
Support ADA compliance and quality control efforts.
