Senior Director, Internal CommunicationsJob Description:

The Senior Director, Internal Communications is responsible for leading internal communications strategy for the National Audubon Society. They will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive internal communications program to inform, encourage, and support staff engagement and commitment to our mission. They will also be point on internal crisis communications for the organization.

As a thought leader at Audubon, the Senior Director, Internal Communications will partner with staff across the organization, including the People and Culture team and leadership team. They will lead a comprehensive, coordinated communications and messaging plan to ensure staff are connected, informed, and engaged.

This person will report to the VP, Communications and will supervise one communication team member and agency partners in comprehensive internal message planning and strategies that advance Audubon's priority initiatives and strengthen organizational culture.

This is a hybrid position and can be based in our Washington, DC or New York City office locations.

Compensation:

Salary range based on geo-differentials:

$150,000-$165,000= Washington, DC

$165,000-$180,000= New York, NY

Essential Functions

Collaborate closely with the VP of Communications to establish a vision for internal communications that aligns with Audubon's strategic goals.

Design and implement an internal communications strategy to advance Audubon's Strategic Plan, foster a consistent and unified organizational voice, and ensure the successful alignment of organizational priorities to staff, chapters, and boards.

Work with Audubon leadership team, provide recommendations and manage internal response to crisis situations.

Provide communications expertise and drive all internal communication efforts, coordinating with various internal stakeholders to transform abstract concepts and messages into compelling communications that foster a deep understanding of Audubon's strategies and initiatives.

Identify opportunities to convey Audubon’s mission, celebrate organizational impact, and recognize staff achievements.

Oversee channel strategy, working with Technology and People and Culture teams, to facilitate the efficient information sharing and collaboration needed to distribute internal updates and announcements that promote Audubon's work to a variety of audiences.

Write and edit internal messages and talking points for senior leaders.

Collaborate with VP, Communications to ensure internal communication messages are consistent with external messages.

Work with leadership team to identify needs and develop communication resources to support and empower staff across the Audubon network in their role as integral components of the organization’s communication network.

Oversee relationship and management of external agency partners, as needed, related to internal communications support.

Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing internal communications team. Set clear objectives, provide guidance, and foster a culture of creativity and collaboration.

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related experience required.

10+ years' experience writing and managing communications with 3-5 years focused on internal communications and 3 years of leadership. Experience working in a large distributed organization undergoing change strongly preferred. An equivalent combination of education and work experience will also be considered.

Experience developing and executing internal communication strategies, working collaboratively across the organization, and evaluating and measuring the effectiveness of internal communications.

Excellent presentation and writing skills, with experience writing for a variety of voices and channels, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in-person and virtually.

Strong listening, collaboration, and consensus-building skills, ability to build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across the organization.

Experience managing crisis communications.

Experience in change management and helping organizations undergo transformation.

Strong project management, ability to oversee team members and consultants, effectively manage project scope, teams, timelines, details, and budgets, with attention to detail.

Strong analytical skills with the ability to reason through issues and resolve problems while working efficiently under time constraints.

Available to work extended hours, including weekends and holidays to respond to critical time-sensitive needs, such as organizational crises and emergencies.

Proficiency with Sharepoint, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other key Microsoft Office and web-based products.
