What the job entails
As stated previously, Dental Assistants have many responsibilities, including patient care, administrative tasks, and maintaining a safe and clean environment:
- Patient care
Dental Assistants work closely with our patients. They are expected to be "on" throughout the working day, so a social personality is a must. Dental Assistants provide patient care by taking X-rays, assisting with complex procedures, and interacting with our patients. They prepare patients for procedures by explaining what will happen and ensure the patient's individual needs are met. During procedures, they will pass instruments, hold equipment, suction, and more. Dental Assistants play an important role in patient education and relationship management.
- Administrative tasks
Dental Assistants schedule appointments, update medical records, chart existing/needed/completed treatment, process prosthetic cases, manage referrals, and order supplies. They also review the doctor's schedule to plan room setups and determine where help is needed, to ensure a smooth workday.
- Maintaining a safe and clean environment
Dental Assistants sterilize dental equipment, treatment rooms, and work areas, in compliance with OSHA standards. They maintain orderly clinical rooms and supply closets. Dental Assistants ensure the doctor has everything he/she may need when completing treatment, by preparing the clinical room prior to starting. They receive training in emergency response to keep our patients and employees safe.
