The UC Irvine Student Health Center is a comprehensive outpatient clinic staffed with licensed primary care physicians, psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, dentists, physician assistants, registered nurse practitioners, and registered nurses. Medical specialists from various disciplines including dermatology, orthopedics/sports medicine, gynecology, internal medicine, and ENT provide on-site consultation on a regular basis. Student Health also offers basic radiology and clinical laboratory services, insurance consultation, and an on-site pharmacy, making SHC a comprehensive and convenient clinic dedicated to serving students.

Your Role on the Team

Under the Supervision of the Dental Back-Office Supervisor, the position performs four-handed chairside dentistry, assisting the dentist in all procedures. The incumbent must be able to perform permitted duties according to the Dental Board of California; disinfects and sterilizes rooms, equipment and instruments; takes X-rays; orders supplies; provides maintenance of equipment. Follows infection control protocols and OSHA regulations. Must have accurate knowledge and must have completed a board-approved radiation safety course to take dental X-rays. The incumbent is responsible to complete assigned daily, weekly, monthly and yearly schedule of duties. The incumbent also performs preventive maintenance of all dental equipment. Must keep operatories fully stocked daily. The position provides support to front office operation; computer data entry; schedules appointments; checks patients in and out; processes payments; verifies eligibility.

What It Takes to be Successful

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Completion of a program in dental assistance; or two years of experience working in a dental office; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. Required
  • Dental Assisting course certificate or proof of two years of experience. Required
  • Radiation Safety course certificate. Required
  • A Dental Board of California approved 8-hour course in infection control. Required
  • A Dental Board of California approved course in the Dental Practice Act. Required
  • Must possess a current Basic Life Support (BLS) / Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card. Required
  • Experience performing duties pertaining to a Dental Assistant as determined by the Dental Board of California. Required
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards for infection control and sterilization. Required
  • Knowledge of dental terminology and tooth numbering. Required
  • Reading comprehension and writing skills. Required
  • Good customer service skills and communication skills. Required
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced working environment. Required
  • Computer Skills. Required
  • Experience with 4-handed dentistry. Preferred
  • Knowledge of Dentrix. Preferred
  • Telephone etiquette Preferred

Education:

  • A Dental Board of California approved course in the Dental Practice Act
  • A Dental Board of California approved 8-hour course in infection control.
  • Dental Assisting course certificate or proof of two years' experience

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must possess a current Basic Life Support (BLS) / Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card.
  • Radiation Safety course certificate.

Preferred:

  • 1-3 years Dental office experience

Special Conditions:

  • This position's schedule is M-F and during traditional work hours, however, weekend or non-traditional work hours may be required for special projects or busy times of the year, or when strict deadlines must be met. In the case of extended hours, this position may be required to work those hours.
  • Employment in this position is contingent upon successful completion of a Department of Justice (DOJ) Live Scan background check, verification and continued monitoring or licensure as it applies to the position, and successful completion of our background review or credentialing process, as appropriate to the position.
  • The employee must comply with OSHA, CA/OSHA, and CDC recommendations and requirements regarding vaccination and testing of healthcare employees. This includes, but may not be limited to; current hepatitis B immunizations, annual flu vaccinations, and annual tuberculosis screening. At the discretion of Student Health Center, the employee may be offered an option to sign a declination acknowledgement in lieu of receiving an annual flu vaccination.
  • Per the UC Ethics Briefing, the employee is responsible for reporting any and all potential conflicts of interest to their supervisor in a timely manner.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $21.07- $21.73 (Hourly).
