Job Summary:

The manager, innovation develops projects and partnerships related to research and development on renewable energy innovation. Innovation includes but is not limited to hydrogen, carbon capture, GHG emissions, methanation, separation, and new technologies. Plans, develops, and manages innovation capital projects state-wide from estimating stage to completion relating to clean energy and innovation strategic initiatives. Plans, develops, and manages current and future partnership agreements related to innovation technologies. Provides technical and business feedback on these projects and initiatives and ensures coordination with rest of company for the integration of renewable energy innovation technology and research.

Responsibilities: Plans, formulates, and/or coordinates with the Sr. Director, Clean Energy & Innovation on all aspects of innovation research and development proposals for both innovation projects and partnerships. Reviews innovation capital project requirements in collaboration with the Sr. Director or Executive Committee and plans and support project prioritization. Plans and support formulation of all aspects of the innovation capital projects, such as specifications/design, commercial and financial assessments, cost estimates, regulatory requirements, time frame, funding sources and limitations, and allotment of available resources to various phases of project. Submits or presents plan to Sr. Director or Executive Committee for approval. Reviews innovation partnership requirements in collaboration with the Sr. Director or Executive Committee and plans and support partnership prioritization. Plans and support formulation of all aspects of the commercial agreements, such as value, technical specifications/design, cost estimates, regulatory requirements, time frame, funding sources and limitations. Submits or presents plan to Sr. Director or Executive Committee for approval. Effectuates the implementation of new technologies by: conducting or assuming a significant role in the negotiation of innovation proposals; performing as liaison with the supplier, partners, appropriate government agencies, and between internal departments (such as sales and operations). Act as focal point for these activities as applicable. Conducts technical research and applicable testing to review new innovation partnership agreements as applicable. Practices and communicates the Company's Desired Leadership Style; sets expectations for assigned personnel that promulgate its principles. Keeps current with laws, governmental regulations, trends and developments in this industry. Establishes and maintains contact with various trade and professional associations such as AGA, GRI, NPGA, WEI, ASHRAE and participates in various meetings and task forces with various organizations as approved by the Company. Complies with all safety rules and cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety and safe work habits, to include the reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis. Complies with all applicable MIC and Hawaii Gas policies and procedures. Maintains assigned work area and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe manner; performs housekeeping duties as required and/or instructed. Works in a safe and responsible manner. Performs all other related duties as instructed by supervisor/manager.

Minimum Education & Work Experience: Master degree in related field. 10+ years' experience in the technical aspects of the gas industry, renewable gas and innovation. Proven track record of developing and managing capital projects from concept identification through to asset operation; managing and coordinating team members to deliver the project on time and within budget constraints. Demonstrated excellent commercial and business skills with proven technical competence to performing research and development activities. Demonstrated and unwavering commitment to safety. Demonstrated proactive, project and partnership-oriented individual with lateral, integrated, and strategic thinking. Proficient in the MS Office suite of tools, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and MS Project.

Preferred Education & Work Experience: PhD degree in related field (chemistry, chemical engineering, energy). Working experience in a Union environment desired.

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation: Valid Hawaii Driver's license. Authorization to work in the United States.

Specialized Knowledge: Renewable gases (including hydrogen) technical knowledge. Commercial negotiations and partnership agreements. Capital project development and management. Regulatory requirements. Local and external related Research and Development entities. Understanding of basic chemistry and gas characteristics also important.
