DEFINITION

This is skilled work in the operation of construction and maintenance equipment. Work in this class involves responsibility for continuous safe and efficient operation of construction and maintenance equipment. The position may involve operating equipment of a lower classification, supervising a limited number of semi-skilled or unskilled workers, and performing manual tasks which require the use of hand tools, however these tasks are performed whenever there is no need for equipment operation. Work assignments are received in the form of general work orders, or received in detail as work progresses. Work is reviewed through observation of the quantity and quality of results attained, and the condition of the equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS • Operates a backhoe, and other road and utility repair equipment. • Participates in performing semi-skilled and unskilled manual tasks. • Assists in repairs to underground utility lines and streets. • Makes minor repairs and adjustments, and looks

after the oiling, greasing, and cleaning of the equipment operated. • May operate such other construction as may from time to time be required, and transport men and materials. • Must be willing to work extra hours in the event of emergencies requiring repairs to streets and underground utilities.

 

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS • Responds to departmental after-hours emergencies requiring expeditious corrective action when needed. • Attends in-service training when required. • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: • Principles and methods of operating the assigned equipment. • Occupational hazards of the types of work performed, and of necessary precautions to be followed. • Safety procedures in the use of tools and equipment related to repairing underground utility repairs • Pipe materials, repair and installation methods Ability to: • Make minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment, and detect operating defects. • Organize, develop, and supervise work of subordinate personnel when assigned. • Operate assigned equipment safely and efficiently. • Perform manual work under hot and humid conditions. • Understand and follow oral and written instructions; express ideas accurately, clearly and effectively. • Perform work requiring strength and dexterity. • Meet work schedule and attendance standards. • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING • High school diploma or GED. • Three (3) years in operation of equipment for which hired or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. • Valid Florida Class B CDL or ability to obtain within 6-months of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Tasks involve the intermittent performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS Tasks are performed in outdoor environments. Due to the nature and non-specific location of the work environment, tasks include potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements, e.g. heat, humidity, inclement weather. Some tasks include working in and around potentially hazardous environments and/or chemicals, where heightened awareness to surroundings and observance of established safety precautions are essential in avoidance of injury or accident.
