Diesel Mechanic for Heavy Equipment
Thompson Equipment Maintenance, Inc. is currently seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic to support the Shop’s fleet in the Charleston Tri-County area. The majority of duties assigned to this position will involve heavy equipment maintenance and construction equipment on site in the local area. Assignments will also include work on automotive equipment.
Roles and Responsibilities
- The Heavy Equipment Mechanic will be responsible for inspecting equipment to locate and determine the extent of necessary repairs and take corrective action necessary.
- Maintains and repairs automobiles, trucks, tractors, mixer trucks, dozers, excavators, pumps, and the like, inclusive to diesel and gasoline engines and similar equipment.
- Makes installation or repairs to special equipment
- Operates and maintains tools and machinery used in the repair and maintenance of heavy maintenance and construction equipment
- Assists Shop Foreman in the selection of parts for equipment.
- Performs minor welding and brazing work as needed
- Keeps simple records and reports
- Assists internal customer’s drivers and operators on a daily basis.
- HOURS typically: Monday through Friday, 6am - 4pm but may vary
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Preferred four years (4) of varied mechanical experience on gas and diesel powered trucks or heavy construction equipment within a certified shop.
- Possession of a valid South Carolina Class D license and a clean driving record
- Either completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a gas and/or diesel-powered truck mechanic and/or a heavy construction equipment mechanic.
- Use of your own tools
- Must obtain a negative drug test result prior to hire and maintain throughout term of employment.
- Must meet company employment standards regarding background and driving records as needed.
- Have the ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 90 pounds.
- Must have the ability to stand, kneel and crouch for long periods of time.
- Flexible availability to include overtime and possible weekends required.
- Work environments will vary making it necessary to tolerate weather conditions such as rain and extreme temperatures. Employees may be exposed to dust, dirt, loud noises, etc.
- 21 years of age.
- Must have a clean driving record and background
- Preferred that you live in the Charleston Metro area, within a 50 mile radius
Preferred Skills/Experience
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in construction, assembly, overhaul, repair and adjustment of gas and diesel powered trucks, heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of operating heavy construction and maintenance equipment as well as gas and diesel powered trucks.
- Knowledge of safety, regulations and practices.
- Ability to read and write English at a level required for successful job performance and communicate effectively.
- Fabricate, repair and make adjustments to various equipment and systems
- Perform minor welding preferred
- Work from simple drawings and sketches and make sketches of broken parts for replacement.
PAY IS BASED ON EXPERIENCE.
