The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) seeks a Program Specialist to implement regional programs to enhance public safety in Greater Boston, focusing on preparing for and responding to disasters and preventing youth violence through the Northeast Homeland Security Regional Advisory Council (NERAC) and the Metropolitan Mayors Community Safety Initiative (CSI). The Specialist will collaborate with various stakeholders to advance projects that enhance community safety. This position is part of the Public Safety Division in the Municipal Collaboration Department, reporting to the Director of Municipal Collaboration.

About the Department: The Municipal Collaboration Department aims to improve community safety, enhance municipal services, and foster collaboration among municipalities. The Public Safety Division facilitates NERAC programs to prepare for disasters and combat youth violence through various initiatives. This writing-intensive position manages grants and collaborates with other departments on health-focused public safety projects.
Specific duties will include: Draft and ensure the completeness of approval documents and scopes of services for grant-funded projects; Coordinate meetings with grant stakeholders to determine funding priorities; Research and develop project ideas addressing gaps in emergency preparedness and public safety; Monitor grant budgets and process reimbursement requests; Track performance metrics for grant-funded projects; Gather data for grant projects and complete required reports; Develop policies for grant-funded programs; Schedule events and manage logistics; Research grant opportunities and draft applications.
Evening and occasional weekend events, along with travel throughout Massachusetts (1-2 times per month), are required. A valid driver’s license and/or transportation arrangements are necessary. MAPC provides travel support, including MBTA passes and a Zipcar account.
Minimum Qualifications: Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience or a Master’s degree and 1 year of relevant experience.
The successful applicant will demonstrate: Ability to work with diverse communities and focus on equity in public safety programs; Knowledge of federal/state grant processes; Ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively; Excellent time management and organizational skills; Strong written and verbal communication skills; Problem-solving abilities; Capacity to work independently and meet deadlines; Professional demeanor and positive attitude; Willingness to perform administrative functions; Advanced computer skills including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and Adobe.
Compensation and Benefits: The salary ranges from $63,000 - $70,000, depending on qualifications and experience. This full-time exempt position offers excellent Massachusetts state employee benefits and a flexible work environment.
