Position Overview:

The Master Electrician at Churchill Downs Racetrack (CDRT) is a crucial role responsible for the comprehensive maintenance, repair, and operation of electrical systems across all Frontside facilities (Backside and Trackside as needed). This role requires extensive expertise in electrical systems, proactive maintenance planning, and the ability to handle emergency responses, especially during peak events.

The successful candidate will demonstrate technical skills, leadership, and effective communication while coordinating complex projects and troubleshooting electrical issues. The role demands a deep commitment to maintaining safety standards and operational excellence, and an ability to work race day schedule during Churchill Downs Racetrack Spring, September and Fall Meets.

Key Responsibilities:

Electrical Maintenance and Repair:

  • Troubleshoot and repair a wide range of lighting issues, including resetting breakers, resolving circuit problems, and checking emergency and exit lighting.
  • Spring lamp-up after Opening Week, retrofit lighting fixtures to LED to improve energy efficiency where possible.
  • Perform routine checks and maintenance on electrical systems supporting heating and cooling to ensure continuous operation and safety.

Equipment and Appliance Maintenance:

  • Repair and maintain various appliances and equipment, including fans, heaters, and exhaust systems.
  • Address issues with TV sets, compressors, and refrigeration equipment, ensuring functional support for essential systems.
  • Maintain, install, and troubleshoot generator systems, ensuring reliable backup power during outages.

Preventive and Scheduled Maintenance:

  • Conduct preventive maintenance for electrical infrastructure, including regular checks on high-use equipment, to prevent downtime.
  • Lead routine inspections and repairs of water heaters, pumps, and other essential equipment to support overall system integrity.
  • Collaborate with facilities staff to manage seasonal requirements, such as winterization and heating system adjustments, to prepare for temperature fluctuations.

Administrative & Team Responsibilities:

  • Accurately document work performed, maintain logs for equipment repairs, and update maintenance records to ensure compliance and track project progress.
  • Support vendor relationships, managing contracts and overseeing work for external providers on retrofit and electrical maintenance projects.
  • Respond to power outages and investigate root causes, ensuring quick and effective restoration.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Apply thorough knowledge of local and national electrical codes, OSHA requirements, and Churchill Downs safety protocols to all tasks.
  • Perform checks and repairs on all components to ensure operational safety during high-traffic events.

Education, Training, and Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 15 years of documented experience as a Journeyman or Master Electrician in complex, large-scale facilities.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a technical degree or accredited trade apprenticeship preferred.
  • Proven expertise in electrical systems installation, maintenance, and repair, with significant experience in troubleshooting and maintenance of large-scale equipment and HVAC electrical components.

Licenses & Additional Requirements:

  • Valid Kentucky Driver’s License.
  • Active Kentucky-issued Master Electrician license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid gaming license, as required by Churchill Downs Racetrack operations.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

The role requires physical activity, including standing, walking, climbing, and handling tools and materials up to 50 pounds. Work is performed in varied conditions, including outdoor environments, exposure to humidity, airborne particles, and occasional extreme temperatures.
