Radiation Safety Specialist
EH&S Admin Full Time 82321BR Job Summary
Under the supervision of the UCSF Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and with minimal oversight, the Radiation Safety Specialist (RSS) acts as a subject matter expert in radiation safety for Campus Departments, the Medical Center, and EHS professionals. This position is responsible for monitoring the use of radioactive materials, radiation producing equipment, lasers, non-ionizing radiation sources; performs routine audits of laboratories, radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiation oncology departments; conducts radiation safety training, and assists medical staff in the therapeutic administration of sealed and unsealed radioactive materials. The incumbent performs duties mandated under California and Federal Radiation Control Regulations for the use of radioactive materials and radiation machines. The primary regulatory jurisdictions are Title 17 California Code of Regulations; and Titles 10, 21, and 49 Code of Federal Regulations. Position conducts radiation safety assessments and serves as part of the medical team providing regulatory required counseling to patients and their families. Position requires knowledge of current regulations, the level of compliance of the University to the appropriate regulations, and the appropriate guidance of recognized expert organizations such as the NCRP, ICRP, HPS, etc. The incumbent must possess excellent public speaking skills and high-level interpersonal skills required for communication in a diverse environment. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $84,600 - $126,900 (Annual Rate). Department Description
The Environment, Health and Safety Department is responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy environment at UCSF for all faculty, staff, students, patients and visitors while advancing health worldwide and without limiting academic freedom. Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in health physics or related area and/or equivalent experience/training Three (3) or more years of work experience in a radiation protection program or related work experience Thorough knowledge/understanding of specific EH&S field(s) including related laws and regulations; and general knowledge/understanding of all EH&S fields Thorough knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards and guidelines Thorough written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen and skill to communicate effectively in a diverse environment Strong analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within time and budget constraints Strong skills to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in health/medical physics Five (5) years of radiation safety technician experience Direct experience with diagnostic and therapeutic uses of ionizing and nonionizing radiation utilized throughout the medical center, including procedures in Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Oncology, Interventional Radiology and other departments Professional certification preferred:
Certified Health Physicist, or successful completion of a 200 hr Applied Physics structured educational program, consisting of classroom and laboratory training in radiation physics and instrumentation, radiation protection, mathematics in the use and measurement of radioactivity, radiation dosimetry and radiation biology About UCSF
