This role involves ensuring the cleanliness and efficiency of the studios, maintaining equipment and inventory, and promoting safe working practices. The manager will provide instructional and technical support to undergraduate and graduate students during class and open studio hours, as well as oversee and train a team of student workers. Additionally, the position includes collaborating on the department’s clay and glaze research. RESPONSIBILITIES Assist the Assistant Director by organizing and overseeing daily operation of the Ceramics facilities. Monitor and maintain Ceramics studios during evening and weekend hours. Supervise student employees in the operation and maintenance of facilities such as kiln operation and general maintenance, plaster and casting room maintenance, 3D printing, and general cleanliness. Assist the Assistant Director in ordering, tracking, and inventorying equipment and supplies. Provide assistance and instruction to the undergraduate and graduate community. Ensure adherence to health, safety, and cleanliness procedures in the facilities. Assist with maintenance and replacement of all equipment and supplies such as clay and glaze chemicals, electric and gas kilns, potter's wheels, band saw, 3D printers, laser engravers, department furniture, etc. Respond to urgent/emergency studio concerns in on-call capacity in conjunction with Assistant Director and Department Chair. Lead authorizations, workshops, and technical training regimen for students and faculty in coordination with Associate Director in laser engraving and 3D printing. Work towards creating, expanding, and updating a large inventory of test tiles and glaze samples with the goal of accurately conveying the widest possible range of glaze, color, and texture applications. QUALIFICATIONS Professional experience in higher education required. Must have a strong working knowledge of all ceramic materials, techniques, and processes. Must have a strong working knowledge of glaze calculation and clay formulation. Experience with CAD and digital fabrication methods. Requisite mechanical skills including welding, carpentry, ability to fire digital electric kilns, ability to manually fire updraft and downdraft gas kilns. Familiarity with office software including G Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, Rhino, and slicing for 3D printing. Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art or related field preferred. Teaching/instructional experience preferred. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Physical Requirements Requires the ability to lift 50 lbs or more in the performance of facility related duties. UNION This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by AFSCME Council 31.
