Position Summary:
The primary role of the Chief Development Officer (CDO) is to be the chief fundraising, marketing, and community relations officer for Orchards Children’s Services. The role of the CDO is to provide leadership and direction for all fundraising, marketing, and community relations activities within Orchards Children’s Services. The CDO must have a proficiency and understanding of tax law as it relates to donors and must have knowledge of planned giving practices.
Qualifications:
Demonstrated leadership abilities in managing teams, developing and achieving financial goals and working with the Board of Directors.
Five years of work experience with evidence of progressively increased administrative responsibilities, preferably in a non-profit setting.
Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, Public Policy, Communications, Marketing or related field. Masters Degree preferred and Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) preferred.
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, public relations and development required. Previous experience managing employees is required. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills are required. Personal computer skills including word processing, database management and spreadsheet proficiency required.
Major Responsibilities:
Develops and updates as required the fund development and brand innovation areas of the strategic plan aligning with the overall strategic plan of the organization.
Directs the implementation of the appropriate sections of the strategic plan with identified goals, objectives and strategies.
Develops a gift and planned giving process plan for each major donor and actively manages the portfolio of donors with potential to make leadership gifts.
Directs the development of donor recognition programs and ensures appropriate donor stewardship.
Develops, reviews, and implements policies that include acceptance of gifts, restricted or non-restricted, in-kind donation, naming of funds, endowment management, and other policies which assure consistent ethical management of donor funds.
Provides overall leadership and direction in matters of fund development and marketing for Orchards Children’s Services.
Conducts interviews, hires, trains, mentors and evaluates staff in Orchards Children’s Services development department. Places emphasis on staff growth and development as well as maintenance of an appropriate level of technical proficiency.
Provides leadership in the development of the Orchards long-range strategic plan.
Provides information and guidance to the CEO, the Executive Leadership Team, and Orchards Children’s Services Board of Directors regarding current and projected trends, areas of deficiency, and significant activities in the fundraising field to facilitate organizational and Board direction and practice.
Identifies and recruits appropriate community leaders to participate in the fund development/public relations/marketing activities of Orchards development process.
Works closely with the Executive Leadership Team to identify key areas of Orchards Children’s Services plan for identifying priorities for philanthropic support.
Mentors a culture of philanthropy that supports the mission, values, and vision of Orchards Children’s Services.
Coordinates all fundraising, marketing, and public relations activities within Orchards Children’s Services, including planned giving annual, capital, major, grant writing, planned giving and special events at the agency.
Works collaboratively with other members of the Executive Leadership and Administrative teams of Orchards Children’s Services.
Maintains professional affiliations and enhanced professional growth and development by keeping abreast of the latest trends in child welfare policy and fundraising developments.
Positively represents Orchards Children’s Services and its donors in community activities.
Other:
Attends trainings as required.
Prepares donor and activity reports for Board member review.
Performs other duties as assigned.
The Chief Development Officer reports to the Orchards Children’s Services President/CEO. The Chief Development Officer works closely with the CEO, other executives, appropriate department directors, staff, and volunteers of Orchards Children’s Services as well as members of Orchards Board of Directors and Advisory Board.
