Licensed Veterinary Technician – Overnight Who We Are ACC is one of the nation’s largest open-admission animal shelters, whose mission is to End Animal Homelessness in NYC. We touch the lives of nearly 30,000 animals each year. ACC is more than an animal shelter; we are a resource to the community, always seeking ways to keep the human-animal bond intact. With a 90% placement rate, our progressive, life-saving initiatives contribute to the successful placement of our animals. We strive to find loving homes for homeless and abandoned cats, dogs, guinea pigs and rabbits, both by adopting animals directly to the public and by partnering with more than 200 dedicated animal placement organizations (our New Hope partners). We also help keep NYC communities safe and rescue animals in need, responding to emergencies that involve animals as well as keeping our doors open 24/7 for people and animals in need. Summary Animal Care Centers of NYC, the city’s only open admission animal shelter, is open 24 hours for emergency intakes. Our city agency partners may bring in animals that are injured, sick, abandoned or victims of cruelty and many need medical attention. They come in all shapes, sizes, and walk, slither, crawl and hop. Working with the on-call veterinarian, the overnight LVT ensures that these patients get the support they require for a successful outcome. This role necessitates advanced technical knowledge as you are the eyes and ears for the doctor who is managing the cases remotely. In addition, you will assist in the provision of emergent care for any animal residing in the shelter that may need attention overnight, including animals in our advanced treatment facility that may be critical care cases. You manage treatment plan of hospitalized patients, performs diagnostics (x-ray, in-house laboratory) and obtains sampling (blood, swabbing), administers medications via all routes, and may need to assist in emergency procedures. Must be a self-starter with the ability to think critically in order to be a stakeholder in the patients’ treatment plans. Works well independently but as part of a team to ensure timely, quality medical care for all animals in the shelter. This position will initially be in our Manhattan Care Center and move to our new 40,000 sq. ft. shelter in Queens that boasts an urgent care, public facing clinic opening mid 2024. The Queens shelter has oxygen cages, advanced diagnostics and we have designed a Fear Free™ ️ space. On the overnight, you will have very little interaction with the public ! Salary and Benefits: $35/Hour. 4, ten-hour work days that may include a weekend night. Qualifications: Eligibility for and willingness to apply for euthanasia technician certification; Good written and oral communication skills; Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, able to multi-task and prioritize; Dependable, reliable, and efficient; Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and stand for prolonged periods of time. Education and Work Experience: Associates or bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology, or foreign equivalent recognized by NYS; Licensure in NYS to practice veterinary technology; Previous experience working in shelters preferred but not required.
