Position Summary
Reporting to the Sr. Director of Research Services, the Manager of High-Performance Computing (HPC) leads the HPC team and interacts extensively with leaders of other research support groups including the Office of the Executive VP for Research and other CUIT groups. Key initiatives to be accomplished by the incumbent include the advancement of a shared High-Performance Computing platform, the advancement of research computing in the cloud, assessment, and development of research tools for computational performance. Additionally, the Manager leads collaboration efforts with other central research support entities at Columbia University.
Responsibilities
Manages a team of research systems engineers/analysts and provides technical leadership for various research initiatives within the University.
Works closely with the CUIT Research Computing Services team to ensure a synergistic and united approach to provide research computing support.
Provides clear direction and effective supervision of the HPC team, communicating strategic objectives and supporting the execution of tactical plans.
Participates in the creation of a vision and strategic road map for technology support for research at Columbia University.
Works strategically and collaboratively with all central information technology areas involved in successful research support and with research and technology leaders at schools and departments throughout the University.
Identifies, evaluates, and implements technologies to continuously improve high-performance computing.
Develops synergies across the University to increase IT productivity and reduce associated costs.
Ensures systems and application designs that are scalable, reliable, and secure.
Works with technical infrastructure to establish and maintain appropriate research technology initiatives. Oversees the quality of support to existing services and identifies and resolves current and future needs.
Designs and manages technology tools that serve the needs of research faculty to proactively prepare for service advancement, expansion, or replacement.
Provides high-level vendor management and vendor selection guidance for medium to high-scale projects.
Interacts with CUIT and EVPR management to review, plan, recommend, and coordinate services to ensure a smooth transition of change management and effectively communicate project status and major initiatives.
All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree desirable.
Minimum 5-7 years’ related experience.
5 years Linux/Unix experience.
Prior experience in programming, software development, or system administration.
Demonstrated team leadership with experience in managing multiple information technology teams with data management experience.
Experience with moderate scale project management, methodologies and systems implementation.
Expert knowledge of technology, applications, and interfaces designed to support research.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Demonstrated excellence in a variety of competencies including teamwork/collaboration, analytical thinking, communication and influencing skills, and technical expertise.
Ability to work with changing priorities and with multiple projects.
Ability to be precise and attentive to detail is essential.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to work weekend and off-hour work on occasion.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with high-performance computing clusters.
Strong technical knowledge of systems and technologies that support various types of research in the academic community.
7+ years of progressive information technology experience in research systems engineering, research-focused environment or a related field.
Experience at the Manager level or above, overseeing an information technology engineering group of moderate size and complexity.
Experience assessing and implementing advanced technology architectures and approaches in various research areas.
Advanced degree in computer science, computer engineering, data science or relevant science or engineering field.
Direct experience with academic research including successful research grant proposal preparation and submittal, or execution of technology-enhanced research.
Experience defining, managing, and mentoring a team to resolve conflicts and encourage constructive interchange with peers and team members.
