Job Summary

Reporting to the Crusher Foreman, the Gravel Tester is responsible for testing gravel for gradations in size at our gravel pits to determine suitability for use in highway or road construction. This position requires traveling for extended periods of time to perform duties at various locations.


Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Gravel Tester include, but are not limited to:

Testing

  • Obtain and/or receive gravel sample for testing
  • Weigh sample before and after heating to determine moisture content
  • Take gravel and place in splitter to split the samples and reduce them in size
  • Place gravel in pan upon a stove and heat gravel until thoroughly dry
  • Once the gravel is dry, pour the gravel (weighing up to 15 lbs.) through a Gilson. Flip switch for the gravel to pass through screens for separation
  • Once gravel has been able to settle on a screen, the gravel on each individual screen is weighed.
  • Complete paperwork to record the percent of gravel passing through each sieve.
  • Understand and follow directions from supervisors as to required work area.
  • Train new employees on how to safely and efficiently test gravel.
  • Assist with the set-up, tear-down, and mobilization of the Crusher.
  • Undertake other construction related duties as required, such as assisting other employees working in the gravel pit or on the Crusher.

  • Promote, execute and adhere to the company’s safety policies and encourage all employees, subcontractors, and consultants to adopt safety as a culture.
  • Attend and participate in safety meetings and inspections.
  • Work in a safe, responsible manner to not intentionally or unintentionally injure oneself, or endanger the well-being of others.
  • Understand and comply with Company policies and procedures.
  • Promote a team approach and maintain an open and respectful approach to communication with all employees.
  • Wearing appropriate protective equipment: steel toed boots, hard hats, ear and eye protection.

 

 Requirements/Experience

  • On the job training provided.
  • No High School Diploma or G.E.D. required, but preferred.
  • Able to operate a calculator and work with decimals and fractions.
  • Valid driver’s license and good Motor Vehicle Report
  • Previous laboratory experience preferred.
  • Shifts are typically 8 – 10 hours, but work schedule is weather dependent, so flexibility is required.
  • A willingness to work overtime, as required.
  • Work is performed in a combination of an indoor laboratory and outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and cold, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
  • Must be physically able to carry out testing process on a repeatable basis and carry at least 75 LBS on a regular basis.
  • MSHA certification is required. This will be provided if needed.
  • Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol testing requirements.
