Job Purpose
Oversees all production at the EnerSys Hays, KS flooded lead battery manufacturing plant, reporting to the Plant Manager. EnerSys Hays produces industrial batteries for reserve power in several industries including communications, utility, information technology and nuclear back up power. Ensures production goals to meet customer demand and corporate profitability. As a project manager, drives innovation and change in plant operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Analyzes work orders to estimate worker hours and create machining schedules that meet both internal and external needs for production departments on all shifts.
- Interprets specification and job orders to workers, and assigns duties for all shifts.
- Ensures all shifts verify parts and product conforming to Quality specifications.
- Consults with engineering personnel relative to modifications of machines and equipment in order to improve production and quality of products.
- Reviews productions orders or schedules to ascertain product data such as types, quantities and specifications of products and scheduled delivery dates in order to plan department operations.
- Plans production operations, establishing priorities and sequences for manufacturing products.
- Maintains scrap at less than 1.1%.
- Develops, recommends, and implements measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.
- Supports and drives health and safety initiatives.
- Prepares operational schedules and coordinates manufacturing activities to ensure production and quality of products meets specifications.
- Reviews production, operational and working practices and observes workers to ensure compliance with standard work.
- Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop, department or work crew.
- Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists workers in solving work problems.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with co-workers, all plant personnel, supervisors and managers, executive management, production schedulers/planners, outside contractors, visitors, customers and auditors.
- Compiles stores and retrieves production data.
- Ensures manufacturing areas are clean and organized.
- Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
- Directly manages all production Supervisors/Team Leads on three shifts. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of all subordinate personnel. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
- Responsibilities includes, but is not limited to, interviewing, training, planning, assigning projects, directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Bachelor's degree or the equivalent in manufacturing, project management, engineering or an appropriate discipline plus ten years of related experience, five of which include management of multiple departments.
- Ability to comprehend instructions, both verbal and written.
- Ability to communicate effectively and deliver presentations to corporate executives, customers, auditors, employees and others.
- Ability to make decisions in a constantly changing manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of strategic planning to achieve corporate and plant financial and production goals.
- Possesses strong reasoning ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Must be creative, have excellent analytical skills.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills used to lead and motivate people, manage human resources, manage programs/projects, and drive innovation.
- Skill in preparing and adhering to budgets with sound fiscal management qualities.
- High level of understanding in Mathematics. Ability to work with concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
- Demonstrated project management skills.

- Ability to communicate successfully in a team environment.
- Ability to acquire a thorough knowledge of plant operations, production expectations, policies and procedures.

- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information including manufacturing control systems, schedules, production levels, product and component cost information, material specifications, engineering drawings and documentation, defect records, corrective actions and personnel records.
- Ability to write work instructions and written procedures.
- Ability to ensure compliance with nuclear protocols including ISO-9001 and ISO-14001 requirements.
- Ability to use technology tools such as software, report writing, and database programs to prepare production metrics. Requires knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, accounting and inventory software.
- Professional society affiliation like National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) preferred, but not required. Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing a plus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts; open flames, fumes or airborne particles and extreme heat (non-weather). The employee is exposed to work in high, precarious places. The employee may be exposed to wet or humid conditions. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must be able to lift 30 lbs. routinely and up to 50 lbs. occasionally. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
