SCHOOL FOOD SERVICE HANDLER JOB DESCRIPTION

Salary:  $37,440

The Student Food Service Worker is responsible for the distribution of the school’s breakfast, lunch and snack meal program and the adherence of the compliance and safety regulations. The Student Food Service Worker is supervised by the School Principal and supported by FLACS’ School Food Services for ensuring high operation standards of our school sites following  NYC, NYSED and USDA regulations. 

This position is a 12 month position, with primary hours as Monday to Friday, 6:30AM to 2:30 PM; additional service hours may be requested.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsible for organizing and following safe food storage and maintaining a sanitary kitchen in compliance with New York City, New York State and USDA Regulations.
  • Each day, receive, unpack, and verify vendor delivery for breakfast and lunch; check quantities to ensure food delivered matches daily order; contact School Food Nutrition Coordinator immediately if shortage and/or spoiled food/milk occurs.
  • Prepare, heat and serve daily breakfast, lunch and snacks served to FLACS scholars.
  • Use kitchen heating  equipment to serve hot meals in accordance with Department of Health temperature regulations.
  • Conduct daily temperature testing of refrigerators, milk and food items when delivered and served in accordance with food safety regulations. 
  • Serve daily breakfast meal service to FLACS scholars following nutritional regulations and compliant with reimbursable breakfast meal regulations
  • Serve daily hot lunch meal service to FLACS scholars using appropriate measured serving utensils as indicated by the vendor following nutritional regulations and compliant with reimbursable lunch meal regulations. 
  • Heats/warms food for lunch meal service; takes food temperature compliant with food safety regulations and logs daily temperatures.
  • Work with the School Principal to ensure students with food allergies receive appropriate special meals.
  • Clean and disinfect all food preparation including refrigerators, tools, instruments, and equipment before and after use following CDC, NYC, NYSED and USDA guidelines
  • Adheres to and follows NYC Composting Regulations 
  • Ensure that all food surfaces are clean and disinfected
  • Work with the Principal or designee to submit weekly breakfast,  lunch and snack orders.
  • Complete the reimbursable “Point of Service” meal count on the online Network School Food Authority online meal counting system daily 
  • Keep daily/monthly records of breakfast and lunch meal counts to be submitted for monthly audit. 
  • Align daily meal counts entered for meal reimbursement with production records.
  • Keep all school food records required for audit review by the New York State Department of Child Nutrition Services and USDA.
  • Work together with the Pupil Accounting Secretary to review paperwork for coding free/reduced/full price meals through the National School Lunch Program 
  • Attend network professional development training for school food safety to plan, prep, heat and serve nutritious safe and enjoyable school meals.
  • Complete other tasks and fulfill duties in the school as requested by the principal 
  • In the event of a school closure, responsible for the distribution of food to families 

Requirements

  • NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Certificate in Food Protection required 
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Excellent physical condition and strength
  • Must be able to lift heavy food and food-related items
  • Fingerprint clearance
  • Previous related experience in food service.
  • Ability to read and write and keep records in English
  • Ability to keep simple inventory of supplies on hand 
  • Ability to communicate in English and Spanish a plus
  • Excellent time and attendance required
