JOB SUMMARY
Draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis.
Reporting Structure: Reports to the Director of Laboratory Services
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education
High School diploma or GED Equivalent. Some blood drawing training required.
Work Experience
Must have 500 plus sticks. Must have two (2) years patient blood drawing work experience.
License/Certification
Certification by a nationally recognized organization required.

JOB SPECIFIC CORE COMPETENCIES
Knowledge of commonly used blood drawing concepts, practices, and procedures.
CLIA Standards
Ability to understand and respond to instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Prepares patient for blood drawing procedures--may prick finger to draw blood.
Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log; bringing discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel.
Verifies patient by reading patient identification.
Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks.
Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.
Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring assays by collaborating with nursing personnel to ensure appropriate drug dose to collection time.
Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
Monitors glucose levels by performing bedside glucose tests; recording results; reporting results to unit nurse-manager.
Performs bleeding-times tests by entering results to the computer; notifying pathologist of results falling outside normal ranges.
Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes.
Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
OTHER DUTIES
May conduct interviews, take vital signs, and draw and test blood samples to screen donors at special events and blood bank drives.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Prolonged periods of standing and walking
Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 40 pounds during a scheduled work shift.
Must be able to see with corrective eye wear
Must be able to hear clearly with assistance
May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases
Able to handle emergency and/or crisis situations
May be required to wear protective equipment as necessary
Transferring, repositioning patients.
Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching for patient care functions.
Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment.
Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests including random and reasonable suspicion drug screens.
