The CMA performs routine administrative and patient care support duties in a medical practice to assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensures that the assessment area runs smoothly. The CMA will help to coordinate admission and discharge procedures that are assigned by the RN. Qualifications: EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS H.S. Diploma/GED CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) From one of the following issuing bodies: National Health Career Association (NHA), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), American Allied Health (AAH) or the American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA upon hire or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) From one of the following issuing bodies: American Medical Technologies (AMT) or the American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA). In addition, this certification requires: Successful completion of a Registered/Certified Medical Assistant (RMA/CMA) program or equivalent upon hire and Basic Life Support (BLS) (AHA) within 30 days and Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI Training) within 3 months. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS None Specified SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Capacity to learn and retain information. Strong customer service skills. Compassion and caring in dealing with others. Ability to operate office equipment. Proficiency in basic computer skills. Ability to perform phlebotomy tasks. Ability to withstand stressful situations with families, patients, and caregivers. Essential Functions: + Rooming patients: Collecting pertinent information regarding the patient's chief complaint, family history, social history, surgical history, and medication reconciliation upon arrival for a patient visit. + Telephone Interactions: As directed, completing necessary telephone communications with patients, families, pharmacies, and/or other health care facilities. Gathering information and maintaining patient information via telephone per department specific processes and policies. + Administrative tasks including, but not limited to, patient check in or check out, registration, prior authorizations, scheduling appointments, verification of benefits, and coordination of referrals and testing. + Maintain department specific competencies related to point of care testing, equipment handling, and specialty training. + Completes lab draws and phlebotomy associated tasks + Assists with RN assigned tasks as appropriate + Helps the RN coordinate transfers between regional and external entities + Ability to withstand stressful and emotional situations during hours of working time. + Collecting pertinent patient information such as vital signs and health history. + Scheduling new consultations and routine appointments for patients. + Prior authorizations through insurance companies for services and medications rendered by the department. + Obtains patient demographics and enters into the EMR, completes the registration process for patients entering the facility. + Conducts safety rounds when applicable + Assists unit team members and patients with daily activities and interventions.
