Nursing Job Duties: RN, LPN, MA
General summary of duties: under the supervision of the Provider and the Nurse Manager, the RN, LPN, and MA is responsible for assisting in the delivery of health care, education and patient care for the patients of St. George Medical Clinic.
Position reports to: Medical/Nursing Questions: Immediate Supervisor/Charge Nurse
B.H. Staff and General Questions: Director of Behavioral Health
Job qualifications:
Education/training: High school graduate or GED and current certification if applicable
Graduate of LPN program, Graduate of RN program. Certificate of completion of MA program
Current LPN or RN license
Skills:
- Knowledge of medical practice and care
- Knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures
- Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions (OSHA, HIPPA)
- Ability to assist in a variety of treatments and medications
- Ability to take vital signs
- Skill in developing and maintaining clinical quality assurance

- Ability to maintain records and record test results

Physical abilities:
- Stand for extended periods of time; push, pull and reach; occasionally bend, sit, stoop and stretch
- Have full range of body motion, including handling and lifting of patients
- Have the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity needed to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and medical equipment
- Have a normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate reports; specific vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus
- Occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Occasionally relocate to other jobs / Sites (SBHC, Dental, Vision, Physical Therapy, Behavioral Health, SGMC) If you are employed by St. George Medical this includes all facilities.
Duties and responsibilities: (Medical Department)
- You are assigned a provider and you need to ensure that all their patients are put in rooms, a complete history is obtained. Updates patients’ medications.
- Answers Nurse and Provider messages in notifying patients of their lab results, medication refills, procedure results etc.
- Checks Temps on vaccine and sample refrigerators/ freezers twice each day.
- Performs selected nursing and administrative duties, and assists physicians as required
- Prepares patients for examination and treatment by escorting them from the waiting area to the exam room and taking histories and vital signs. Have patients ready for exams: gown on, shoes off, dressing removed if provider needs to view a wound.
- Room cleaning stock checks and supply orders weekly
- Prepares, cleans and maintains exam and treatment rooms
- Checks rooms for instruments and runs autoclave as needed.
- Performs monthly checks, fire extinguisher, eye-wash stations, glucometer, hgb, pharmacy count, samples, immunizations, family planning BCCSP, Check for Outdates.
- Gives injections and blood draws; assists with EKGs, dressing changes, OB/GYN exams and provides other patient care services as directed
- Maintains sample medication records, administers medication upon physician order and phones in, or enter in EHR medication refill orders as requested
- Prepares and maintains clinical supplies and equipment
- Assists with answering the telephone, providing information as requested and screening calls to the physician
- Assists with scheduling tests and treatments, pre-certifying patients for hospital care and/or procedures, and processing referrals to other providers if referral clerk is unable to complete.
- Contributes to the development of policies and procedures
- Maintains that patient medical records are complete and accurate and up to-date, and other information as needed
- Maintains strict confidentiality. Has current OSHA and HIPPA training.
- Treats staff, physicians, visitors and patients with dignity and respect. Follows the orders for patient care, and the smooth running of the facility, given by their supervisors (Providers, Nurse Manger, Administration).
- Performs other related work as required.
Duties and Responsibilities (B.H.Department)
****In additional to nursing duties listed for Medical Department, which may be applied to B.H. patients as well, please perform the following:
- Administer PHQ-9 form during every patient visit
- Administer GAD-7, MDQ, PCL-55 monthly
- Perform depression screen every visit
- Perform tobacco screen every visit
- Pap’s need to be done on females 21 to 64 years old, every 2 to 3 years unless there is a documented hysterectomy including removal of the cervix.
- Mammograms need to be done annually on females 40 (50-74 UDS) years and older
- Colonoscopies need to be done on males and females 50 to 74 years old, frequency determined by multiple factors. Ask patient(s) when they are supposed to repeat the colonoscopy and document in the notes section.
- If due for pap, mammo, colon cancer screening please notify PCP. If patient has an outside PCP, please encourage them to schedule a f/u. If patient does not have PCP, see if they would like to schedule with one. If so, have receptionist schedule at checkout.
- All patients need height and weight check to determine BMI. If 25-29, diagnose as overweight, if BMI 30 or over, diagnose as obese (see short list)
- Immunizations – please review gaps with patient; they may have had these done elsewhere. If that is the case, please enter them in the chart. If not, offer them to the patient
- If patient is 18 years of age or younger, and is due for a WCC, please have the receptionist schedule the WCC at checkout.
- Diabetes – make sure they have seen PCP/had labs within the last 3-6 months. If not, have receptionist schedule f/u at checkout.
- HTN – if BP is elevated, >140/90, please recheck after 15 minutes of rest. If still elevated, discuss plan with BH provider (notify PCP, schedule f/u….)
Work environment:
The work of this position is performed in an environmentally controlled office environment. The position requires the ability to work under pressure and with a diverse population, including staff, physicians, clients, patients, insurance companies and other members of the public on a regular basis. The position may cause frequent exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
