Position Overview
The Unit Manager for the Inpatient Unit is a working manager and assumes accountability for the inpatient unit. The Unit Manager works collaboratively with the Director of Nursing and provides strategic leadership and supervision in the areas of patient care, education, and safety in accordance with organizational policies and standards of professional nursing practice. The Unit Manager promotes a professional practice environment and develops and maintains partnerships with key stakeholders to facilitate positive patient care outcomes. Partnerships include ongoing collaboration with Director of Nursing, physicians, nursing staff, and organizational leaders. Responsibilities include, but not limited to all aspects of clinical nursing, patient/family education, customer service, patient safety, personnel management, quality outcomes, and regulatory compliance.

Essential Job Functions
  • Directs the care of patients through the continuum of care as related to their area from the time of admittance through the patient stay and follow-up services.
  • Coordinates patient care with nursing teams
  • Utilizes patient care process, management theory, and organizational skills in accomplishing goals
  • Manages operations and workflow through effective planning, organization and delegation; maximizes performance and efficiency by planning, organizing and distributing work amongst supervised staff.
  • Provides direction to all staff on age-specific care and is able to move to direct patient care when needed to ensure competent and effective staffing.
  • Ensures compliance with nursing standards of practice, CMS and DHH standards.
  • Demonstrates a genuine commitment to foster the growth and development of other through effective orientation and continuing education of staff.
  • Ensures departmental compliance, infection control policies, safety policies, variance/injury reporting and ensures staff readiness for emergencies.
  • Assist physicians and extenders as needed.
  • Plans, organizes, and directs activities for evening shift of hospital nursing department
  • Prepares work schedule and assigns duties to the nursing staff on the evening shift
  • Responsible for time and attendance-approval of time off-for nursing staff on the evening shift.
  • Responsible for ordering of supplies for the Inpatient Units-including both North and South-to include office supplies, lab supplies, cleaning supplies, dietary and nutritional supplies, and patient supplies.
  • Perform yearly evaluations
  • Assist staff with the resolution of daily duties and issues.
  • Provides reeducation to staff as indicated
  • Identifies and resolves customer services issues with patients/families as indicated
  • Troubleshoots clinical and non-clinical issues as indicated
  • Ensures all clinical issues are effectively communicated to the appropriate physician team and Director of Inpatient Services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Current RN state Licensure
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in Medical/Surgical nursing
  • Five (5) years experience in a supervisory role -Preferred
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification. PALS certification not required, however; preferred or willing to certify.
  • Physically able to perform CPR
