Scope of responsibilities and accountability:

  • Collaborates with members of the hepatology service includes providers, ancillary staff, and support staff to oversee patient access and clinical operations.
  • Acts as liaison between OhioGastro hepatology services and other external collaborating hepatology programs.
  • Practices within the scope of the Ohio Nurse Practice Act and approved company policies and procedures.
  • Reporting concerns to Director of Operations or superior.
  • Ensures liver program operational efficiency by daily/monthly monitoring provider schedules and patient schedules.
  • Provides occasional training and education regarding hepatology populations for support staff and clinical nursing staff.
  • Maintains annual competency training modules for clinical staff.
  • Schedules and oversees all clinical staff certifications in BLS & ACLS.
  • Assists hepatology physicians and/or board of directors with assigned projects related to hepatology services.

Major activities and essential job functions:

  • Advocate by ensuring access to appropriate care and services, promoting self-care management and prevention of hepatology patients.
  • Assist patients in navigating, identifying and removing barriers to care and coordinating patient care services by utilizing the nursing process to help patients move through the healthcare continuum.
  • Collaborate and work within the multidisciplinary team to ensure a comprehensive plan of care in accordance with nationally recognized evidence-based standards.
  • Educate and instruct patients and their caregivers in understanding and managing their diagnoses, treatment, and symptoms.
  • Demonstrate expert, knowledgeable in care management principles and utilization of system and community resources tailored to meet individual patient needs.
  • Support physician practice.
  • Ensure appropriate and timely access for new referrals and return appointments, communicating with referring offices to ensure timely receipt of records and appropriate triaging of patient appointments.
  • Collaborate with partnering transplant institutions for new referrals and ongoing care coordination, maximizing chronic care management quality, and enhancing the patient experience.
  • Acts as a liaison and resource to office and center staff.
  • Maintains patients’ rights of privacy and confidentiality.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with current license to practice in the State of Ohio
  • Minimum of three years recent and relevant clinical experience
  • Responsible for maintaining current ACLS & BLS certification
  • Baccalaureate and management experience preferred
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal relation skills
  • Knowledgeable in gastroenterological nursing and ambulatory care – assists with accreditation, licensure, and Medicare standards and requirements

Regulatory Requirements/Risks/Exposures

  • Works with chemicals including, but not limited to, chlorine bleach, glutaraldehyde and fomalin
  • Physical demand requirements meet those defined as HEAVY work, exerting 50 – 100 pounds of force occasionally, 25 – 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 1 – 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

List of Job Duties

  • Staff PTO approval, payroll approval
  • Create and provide onboarding training for new clinical staff
  • Annually review competency training modules for changes or updates
  • Organize BLS & ACLS for incoming clinical staff
  • Organize recertification courses for current staff in BLS & ACLS
  • Work with HR onboarding team for NHO
  • Monthly medication checklist review and order as needed
  • Annual disaster (COTS) and mock code drills for all locations
  • Report disaster drills to Center Leadership as needed.
  • Schedule equipment maintenance checks
  • Issue staff counseling (under guidance of DOO or HR)
  • Arrange and complete CQI meetings at least quarterly
  • Complete occurrence/grievance reports and investigate concerns – report to DOO
  • Relay supply or equipment issues to DOO
  • Facilitate staff competency annually
  • Perform staff evaluations annually
  • Report monthly services reports/occurrences to DOO
