The City of Amarillo Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for summer 2024 and is looking for lifeguards who want to have a rewarding summer job! Our ideal lifeguards have the flexibility to work approximately 20-30 hours per week during the summer season at any of the city swimming pool locations, are able to easily follow life-guarding standards, responds to emergency situations, attend in-service review, daily cleaning of the facility, and some may even have the desire to teach swimming lessons. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • To ensure the safety of all the patrons by preventive lifeguarding, and to provide the citizens of Amarillo a top notch facility with outstanding pool employees.
  • Set and maintain standards that provide a healthy and safe environment for all users.
  • Standard lifeguarding based on the individual pool site.
  • Maintain training hours (in-services) for valid lifeguard license (4 hours per month)
  • Rule enforcement (varies at each pool site).
  • Know, understand, and enforce all swimming pool rules.
  • Respond to emergency situations and perform accordingly.
  • Instruction of swim lesson levels assigned by Lesson Coordinators.
  • Daily cleaning and disinfecting of all public areas.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions from management.
  • Follow all policies and procedures outlined in the employee handbook.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by management or Aquatic Supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES.
  • 300 yd. Swim
  • Tread water 2 minute (without using hands)
  • Retrieve 10 lb. brick from 7ft. of water
  • Pass American Red Cross skills training. Work shifts between the hours of 7:30 am-10:45 pm (Including teaching swim lessons) Must be willing to work at any Amarillo City Swimming Pool.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Must have: ability to follow written and oral instructions, ability to respond to emergency situations and have a desire to work with people in a pool environment. Must be at least 15 years of age. Complete an American Red Cross Certification class. Must have transportation to work site(s) with availability to train and work from mid-May to late August. No vacations or leaves of absence available without prior approval and shift coverage.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The employee's work is conducted primarily outdoors in all types of weather conditions and in a dynamic environment that requires the employee to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
