Job Description
AmeriCorps' Up2Us Sports coaches work for local youth-development organizations, such as Youth Mentoring Partnership and Philadelphia City Rowing, to bring social change by teaching youth critical life skills through sport. Coaches are onboarded during the fall and late-winter; please indicate your availability in your application.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific duties and responsibilities will vary based on host site; however, coaches generally are expected to:
- Cultivate, monitor, and maintain a safe and inclusive environment for children to learn and develop sports skills (soccer, basketball, baseball/softball, volleyball, swimming/aquatics, running, football, ultimate, tennis, squash, etc.)
- Mentor youth about life skills and the benefits of physical activity
- Act as a role model to children, gaining their and their communities' trust
- Teach sport-specific skills; setup/breakdown and maintain equipment; maintain safe sport facilities
- Complete Up2Us Sports’ in-person and online sports-based youth development trainings
- Perform data collection activities
- Complete bi-weekly timesheets
Essential Qualifications:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien (and provide documentation to support, as required by AmeriCorps)
- Provide a signed copy of a Social Security Card (as required by AmeriCorps)
- Be able to pass mandatory background checks
- Have experience coaching or teaching diverse groups of children
- Have regular access to reliable transportation to and from the host site
Commitment and Compensation:
This is an AmeriCorps service position with Up2Us Sports. Applicants will learn more about the commitment, compensation, and relationship between AmeriCorps, Up2Us Sports, and host sites during an initial phone screen interview. However, coaches will generally be expected to work an average of 15-20 hours/week, accumulating a minimum of 900 hours over the course of a one-year AmeriCorps service term.
All Up2Us AmeriCorps coaches receive an annual living allowance (stipend), paid bi-weekly. Coaches who complete their AmeriCorps service requirements will receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, which can be used to repay qualified student loans or cover current educational expenses. Compensation for a part-time, half-time Up2Us AmeriCorps coach position is: $9,000 stipend / $3,247.50 education award.
