Physical Therapy Assistant

Full Time - 8:30AM to 5:00PM (M-F)

Position may include weekends.

Role/Position Definition:

Provides physical therapy treatments to patients, working under direction of and as assisted to registered Physical Therapist.


Qualifications/Position Requirements:

A. Education/Experience

  • Associates Degree: Graduated from a 2 year, college level, American Physical Therapy Association approved program


B. Licensure/Certification

  • Current Physical Therapy Assistant licensure from the State of Michigan is required.
  • BLS certification required.


C. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Physical ability to bend, position and transfer patients and exert forces up to 70 lbs.
  • Ability to react effectively to the needs of patients and families.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and initiative when analyzing problems and recommending solutions.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • A. Follows treatment plan and goals established by registered Physical Therapist.
  • B. Administers active and passive manual therapeutic exercises, therapeutic massage, electrical modality treatment such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation and hot and cold packs.
  • C. Provides direct patient care to facilitate restoration of physical and functional abilities.
  • D. Administers tractions to relieve neck and back pain, using intermittent and static attraction equipment.
  • E. Trains patient in use and care of orthopedic braces, prosthesis and supportive devices such as crutches, canes, walkers and wheelchairs.
  • F. Confers with numbers of physical therapy staff and other health team members, individually and in conference to exchange, discuss and evaluate patient information for planning, modifying and coordinating treatment programs.
  • G. Gives orientation to physical therapy aids/technicians.
  • H. Measures patients’ range of motion, length and girth of body parts and vital signs to determine effects of specific treatments or to assist registered Physical Therapist to compile data for patient evaluations.
  • I. Demonstrates an understanding of the Medicare PPS reimbursement system.
  • J. Performs all other duties as assigned.
