Job Description
The responsibilities of the Utility employee are to assist the mechanics in the maintenance, daily cleaning, washing, fueling, and inspection of Authority vehicles. Duties may also include cleaning of the Authority buildings, grounds, and other property throughout the service area.
The importance of the work performed by the Utility employee cannot be overemphasized. Substandard work and inattention to detail will soon be noticed in the appearance and operation of Authority vehicles and property. Every effort must be made to see that this work is done precisely as outlined below.
1)Daily Bus Work - On each operating day, the following tasks must be performed on every vehicle that was in service that day.
a)Bus Sweeping – The bus interior is to be carefully swept. Special attention is to be paid to areas under seats, around seat legs and stanchions, and the driver’s compartment.
b)Interior Inspection - While sweeping, the interior must be inspected for cut or torn seats, lost and found items, vandalism, or equipment defects. Any defects requiring repair will be outlined on Defect forms. Vehicles are to be checked for proof of insurance and registration forms. Winter only: check salt supply and refill as needed.
c)Clean Dash - The dashboard must be thoroughly cleaned and any non-essential papers, used transfers, or other litter are to be discarded.
d)Handrails and Stanchions - All passenger handrails and stanchions will
be thoroughly wiped clean.
e)Fuel Bus - All vehicles will be fueled at the end of each operating day
with the proper grade of gasoline or diesel fuel. The amount and type of fuel dispensed must be recorded on the Vehicle Fuel Form.
f)Wash Bus - The exterior of each bus will be thoroughly washed and rinsed to remove accumulated road soil, salt etc. (Note: This may be omitted when weather conditions allow buses to remain clean.)
g)Clean Windows - All windows will be cleaned inside and out.
h)Mechanical Inspection - The following mechanical items must be checked and recorded as indicated:
(1)Engine Oil-Daily
(2)Transmission Fluid-Daily
(3)Coolant-Daily
(4)Tires - Hammer Check-Daily
Gauge Check-Once per week
Wear Check-Daily
(5)Lights-Daily
(6)Battery-Once per week
(7)Fan Belts-Daily
(8)Power Steering-Daily
i)Empty farebox vault – Fare vaults are to be removed and a new vault is inserted each day. Vault changes are recorded on the Bus Vault form. Removed vaults must be locked in the Vault room when this task is complete.
j)Servicing of Vehicle Tires and Rims - Both mounting and dismounting.
k)Parking of vehicles- Vehicles parked in the bus barn will be arranged in a way that allows the first buses in operation the next day to be closest to the exit.
l)Red-Tagged Vehicles- All vehicles being held for repair will have a red tag on the steering wheel describing the repair needed.
2)Building Maintenance - Utility workers are also charged with maintaining authority buildings. Listed below are tasks to be completed in this regard.
a)Clean Restroom - (as needed per management request). Sweep floors, clean sinks and toilet bowls. If needed, install new toilet tissue and paper towels. Clean mirrors and empty wastebaskets. Clean walls, doors, etc., as needed.
b)Empty Trash Receptacles
c)Clean Bus Maintenance and Storage Area – When and as directed by the Maintenance Manager.
d)Hose down the Bus Storage floor – When and as directed by the Maintenance Manager.
e)Clean Building Windows - As needed - Clean all exterior glass and all windows in Administration and shop area. (Note: Skylights to be cleaned as needed.)
f)Responsible for Night "Security" Lock-Up - Alarms, doors, and gates.
g)Responsible for taking both stick and pump readings
3)Outside Maintenance - In addition to cleaning the interior and exterior of Authority buildings, maintaining the outside of Authority property and bus shelters, is also required. This will include:
a)Cleaning of Sidewalks and Driveways - As Needed. Sweep sidewalks, and pick up trash, and debris.
b)Cleaning of Passenger Shelters - Weekly - Each shelter is to be swept and windows cleaned. Check for loose screws and fasteners and evidence of vandalism. Summer months - Trim grass around shelters. Monthly - Wash the entire shelter, in addition to weekly maintenance.
c)Snow Removal - As Needed - Clear snow from walks and driveways around buildings, and doorways. Apply ice control product. Clear snow from passenger boarding areas at the Downtown Transfer Center, bus shelters, and designated bus stops. Apply ice control product as needed. NOTE: Snowplows and snow blowers will be operated by authorized personnel only, or after proper training.
4)Major Bus Cleaning - To maintain the Authority vehicles in a condition that is attractive to the public, a detailed cleaning of each vehicle, at regularly scheduled intervals, is required. The following items will be included in this cleaning.
a)Scrub ceiling and walls - Remove all dust, grease, finger marks, etc.
b)Clean windows and all interior glass.
c)Clean Destination Sign window - Open the destination sign and clean from inside.
d)Scrub dashboard, and driver’s compartment.
e)Remove (where possible) cushions - Clean behind cushions and scrub cushions.
f)Scrub wheel housings - Front and rear, and rear seat riser.
g)Scrape up chewing gum from the floor - Use a putty knife, (do not damage the rubber floor).
h)Scrub floor and steps - Pay special attention to corners and areas along walls and under seats.
5)Miscellaneous Maintenance - Other types of maintenance or tasks as directed by management, e.g. painting, lawn mowing, or yard work.
6)Scheduling and Work Load - All Utility employees will be expected to share equally in the work load, and be able to perform all duties included in the job description. However, part-time employees may not be required to participate in all functions of the job. The work schedule for Utility employees will be determined by the Maintenance Manager or his designee. If overtime becomes necessary, every effort will be made to spread it evenly among all eligible workers.
7)Operating Authority Vehicles – Utility employees will not operate Authority
vehicles until they obtain a CDL certification.
8) Daytime Utility Employee - The daytime utility employee will be answered directly to the Maintenance Manager.
Duties shall include, but not be limited to:
• Starting and moving of a.m. buses.• Stick measurement of fuel tanks.• Fueling of vehicles as required.• Mounting/dismounting of tires• General cleaning of shop area.• Maintain fluid levels on all non-revenue vehicles.• Perform vehicle changeouts
Other duties as needed will be assigned by the Maintenance Manager.
