Essential Functions
The School Social Worker will work between the home, school and community in providing direct as well as indirect services to students, families and school personnel to promote and support students' academic and social success.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
Related Services
- Participate in special education assessment meetings as well as individual Educational Planning Meetings.
- Work with families of students experiencing living situations that affect their adjustment in school. (home, school, and community)
- Prepare a social or developmental history on children with disabilities.
- Mobilize family, school, and community resources to enable students to learn as effectively as possible.
- Assist in developing positive behavioral intervention strategies.
Student Services
- Provide crisis intervention.
- Develop intervention strategies to increase academic success.
- Assist with conflict resolution and anger management.
- Help students develop appropriate social interaction skills.
- Assist students in understanding and accepting self and others.
Parent/Family Services
- Work with parents to facilitate their support in students’ school adjustment.
- Alleviate family stress to enable students to function more effectively in school & community.
- Assist parents to access programs available to students with special needs.
- Assist parents in accessing and utilizing school and community resources.
Staff Services
- Provide staff with essential information to better understand factors (cultural, societal, economic, familial, health, etc.) affecting a student’s performance and behavior.
- Assess students with mental health concerns.
- Develop staff in-service training programs.
- Assist teachers with behavior management.
- Provide direct support to staff.
School/Community Liaison
- Obtain and coordinate community resources to meet students' needs.
- Help the school receive adequate support from social and mental health agencies.
- Advocate for new and improved community/school service to meet the needs of students and families.
- Help the system respond effectively to each student’s needs.
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in psychology or social work
- Minimum of 2 years job related experience in human services, social work, behavioral/mental health.
- Ability to communicate effectively (verbal & written) with the people you serve, staff, families, health care professionals.
- Demonstrate ability to graph behavior plan using relevant software including MS Office
