POSITION TITLE: Worker/Laborer (May be assigned to Landfill, Maintenance, TBS, or other work crews)

DEPARTMENT: Work Programs

REPORTS TO: Work Programs Manager

FLSA: Full-time, Non-Exempt

BENEFITS: 14 paid holidays, paid vacation, sick leave, and 100% employer-paid healthcare premiums

PAY RANGE: $19.00 hourly, commensurate with experience


POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Work Programs Manager, the Worker/Laborer is responsible for providing general labor projects that may include, but are not limited to, weed abatement, encampment cleanups, litter control, graffiti control, painting, and other maintenance projects/tasks. The position will provide on-the-job training and must adhere to federal, state, and local safety requirements.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Maintenance & Custodial

  • Bag items into trash bags and load into trucks and dumpsters;
  • Cut and rake landscape, climb ladders, pull, and push on even and uneven ground;
  • Operate handheld equipment such as chainsaws, weed trimmers, rakes, hedgers, shovels, and other tools/equipment;
  • Maintain clean tools and equipment as well as an overall safe work environment;
  • Adhere to equipment, tool, and supply inventory requirements; and
  • If appropriate, report concerns, including safety, equipment/tool condition, or other areas of improvement, to their direct Supervisor or Program Manager.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands/conditions described below represent those that must be met/tolerated by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.

  • Frequent standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting and dragging (up to 50 lbs.), and stooping;
  • Exposure to moderate to loud noise levels;
  • Exposure to elements;
  • Possible contact with animals/pets; and
  • Potential for exposure to bodily fluids, needles, and other materials.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to follow policies and procedures established in the Company's Employee Handbook, the Program's PnP, the Injury and Illness Prevention Program, COVID-19 PnP, and other relevant communications and training.

Candidates will also contribute to a positive work environment by behaving and communicating professionally with the community, co-workers, and management.

In addition, the education, experience, and other skills listed below represent the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

A minimum of a combined two (2) years of lived experience and at least one (1) year of manual labor experience.

KEY SKILLS SET
  • Ability to communicate in person;
  • Bilingual skills of any language preferred;
  • Effectively problem-solve and maintain composure in high-pressure situations required;
  • Act as liaison with staff, vendors, and other entities such as the City of San Diego, City of Chula Vista, and other public and private contractors;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal daily supervision required;
  • Maintain a clean driving record, preferred;
  • Respect the "Good Neighbor" policy when working in neighborhoods/communities and
  • Adhere to all safety laws and rules, including those set forth by OSHA.
