Senior/Staff Backend Software Engineer - Product

Foster City, CASoftware – Rider, Vehicle, and Fleet Operations Software /Full-time /HybridService Management and Infrastructure is looking for a Senior/Staff Backend Software Engineer to build out the backend system for Zoox ride-hailing service. You will be responsible for designing, implementing and optimizing the system for real-time vehicle tracking, fleet dispatch, payment processing, vehicle routing and service area management. Zoox robots take missions like rideshare trips, roaming, resting, charging, cleaning, returning to depot, R&D missions. It is the backbone of our autonomous vehicle ride-hailing service and the brains that connects our riders and vehicle operators to our robot fleet.Scope of Work:Fleet DispatchVehicle Roaming: Assign non rider missions for vehicles not carrying ridersDispatch utility missions like charging mission, return to base missions, R&D missionsFleet distribution based on demand forecastDispatch optimization for different and perhaps conflicting objectives like low rider trip waiting time, low vehicle energy consumption, high vehicle fleet utilization rate.PaymentsPromotionDynamic pricing models based upon time and mileage including taxes and regulatory, and product feesBillingPayment processingStripe IntegrationFull and partial refundsTax calculationIn this role, you will:Design and build a scalable, efficient, and robust backend system for Zoox’s ride-hailing serviceBe the owner of core functionalities like payment system, fleet dispatch, service area management to define the technical roadmap, development plan and execute on them effectively.Ensure the best practices in software development including design review, code review, software testing, documentation.Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies to drive novel solutions of our challenging problems of robotaxi ride-hailing service. Collaborate with teams of world-class engineers, product managers, technical program managers from diverse backgrounds with expertise in distributed computing, rider experience, web and mobile applications, autonomous driving, mapping, AI, and software infrastructure to understand their requirements and incorporate them into the design and implementation of the backend system.QualificationsBachelor’s/Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field.Proven experience in algorithm development, with a strong emphasis on operational research methodologies.Proficiency in object oriented programming languages (Kotlin, Java, Python)Experience developing cloud services and an understanding of design for scalability, performance and reliabilityKnowledge about microservice design patterns and DB accessKnowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operationsBonus QualificationsExperience in applying operational research methods such as linear programming, integer programming, stochastic processes, and queuing theory to solve complex dispatch problems.Experience in transportation, logistics, or autonomous vehicles.Experience handling large data sets and scaling service horizontally to a large number of users.Experience in Payment Gateway Integration, Transaction Processing, Tax Calculation, Billing, Dynamic Pricing, Refund/Dispute.Compensation:There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary range for this position is $203,000 to $293,000. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance.
