Job Description:

Summary:
The PBX, Operator I is responsible for communication and dispatch point for all hospital emergency codes including, but not limited to, Code Blue (life-threatening injury or condition), Code Red (fire), Code Echo (evacuation) and Code Adam (infant abduction). These communications often involve hospital Security and 911 emergency dispatches. The Operator will maintain a list of physicians' office, pagers, and home numbers; as well as numbers for local emergency and health care-related businesses and organizations (e.g. Red Cross, nursing homes, EMS, etc.). The Operator is also responsible for maintaining a daily on-call list including but not limited to physicians, Pathology, Maintenance, Dialysis, and Surgery. The Operator is responsible for making sure on-call information is received from these departments on a monthly basis.
The Operator will act as an information desk and receptionist for the facility. This individual is also responsible for routing calls for Kingsport Day Surgery, the Orthopedic Group, and the Appalachian OB/GYN offices. The Operator is also responsible for the playing of the lullaby announcing a birth of a child. The Operator will place long distance calls for staff members for hospital business. This individual will maintain an ongoing log of these calls for hospital records. The Operator will connect calls to outside Information, 800-numbers, and outside long distance operators for collect and credit/calling card calls.
The Operator is responsible for hospital-wide overhead emergency paging maintaining lists of hospital personnel pagers for use in lieu of overhead paging. They are responsible for enforcing current policies regarding the utilization of said pages. Additionally, the Operator is responsible for maintaining and controlling the dissemination of patient information. The Operator will maintain confidentiality of said patient information including, but not limited to, requests for limited or restricted information release within the federal guidelines set forth by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). This position is a first impression area of the Ballad facilities. As such, all Operators are required to maintain the utmost levels of professional communication. The Operator must have the ability to multi-task due to handling a heavy daily call volume.
The Sycamore Shoals Operators also act as backup cashier and perform registration of interlabs and pre-registration of Physical Therapy. After normal registration operating hours and weekends, the Operator will act as front desk and information booth personnel as well as patient check out.

Requirements:
Good organizational skills and the ability to work independently are critical. Due to the nature of the job, decision-making skills and appropriate telephone etiquette are crucial. The ability to communicate, both written and verbally, effectively with employees, patients and physicians is a necessity. Must possess basic computer knowledge-familiarity with Word, Windows and Outlook preferred.
