Mission or Goal of Unit: The Division of Hospital Medicine works in partnership with other pediatric medical and surgical specialists to provide direct pediatric patient care for children with acute or chronic diseases and those with special health care needs. Pediatric Hospital Medicine plays an integral role in the Department of Pediatrics' educational programs (medical students, residents, fellows and ancillary staff). The division engages in quality and safety initiatives via independent study and hospital committee work. The division is essential to furthering the strategic mission and goals of CHoR and VCU Health (VCUH).

Chief Purpose of this position: The Children’s Hospital of Richmond (CHoR) at Virginia Commonwealth University is currently seeking an academic faculty member for the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. CHoR at VCU is committed to the provision of the highest quality patient care and service excellence. Pediatric Hospital Medicine proposes a continuation of the in-hospital faculty presence (spanning 0700-2300 hours 5 days per week and 0700-1700 hours on weekends) in order to provide direct clinical care, enhanced clinical education to medical students, fellows, residents and ancillary staff along with enhanced patient safety with continued supervision of emergency situations (Rapid Response Team activations, Sepsis alerts and huddles).

Position Responsibilities:

  • Teaching: Physician will provide teaching and mentorship to medical students, residents and fellows when applicable. Physician will provide education to ancillary staff as needed.
  • Service: Physician will serve on hospital or departmental (CHoR or VCUH) committees when appropriate, and engage in professional activities through journal review, conference presentations and national organization committee work.
  • Clinical: Physician will provide clinical service as a Pediatric Hospitalist for the Department of Pediatrics of CHoR based at CHoR. Will work the requisite number of days, evenings, weekends and provide off site/home overnight call as designated by the Chief of the Division to be necessary to maintain clinical coverage of the acute care pediatric units.
  • Administrative: Physician will take on administrative duties associated with this role including:
    Committee engagement-VCUH and CHoR specific, attendance and provision of didactic sessions at student/resident lectures, attendance at faculty meetings (VCU and CHoR), attendance and participation at PHM meetings, PHM fellowship conferences. Financial support is possible for specific academic or research interests of the faculty member. 
    • Engagement in CHoR and VCUH Pediatric Committees.
    • Coordination of resources with Pediatric Nursing, Pediatric Specialists, Pediatric Surgeons and above-mentioned ancillary staff as needed.
    • Collaboration with the Chief of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at CHoR to align clinical services of CHoR at VCU.
    • Collaboration with the Chief of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at CHoR to align academic missions with ACUGME and ACGME learners within CHoR at VCU.
    • Collaboration with and outreach to Pediatric Providers in the Richmond Metro Region.    

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be board certified in pediatrics or internal medicine-pediatrics.
  • All candidates must be eligible for medical licensure in Virginia.
  • Drug Enforcement Agency licensure.
  • Credentialing at VCUH is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in the collaboration with and fostering of a diverse hospital team members including ancillary staff, residents and students using an engaged and emotionally safe approach.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of clinical experience in pediatric hospital medicine.
  • Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Completion of Pediatric Fellowship training is preferred but not required.
  • Current board certification in pediatric hospital medicine is preferred but not required.
  • Prior leadership experience or program development in pediatric hospital medicine.
  • Prior experience or formal training in clinical research.
