The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks to hire a Medical Physicist Assistant. The selected candidate will work with qualified medical physicists, dosimetrists, and other team members to assure the safe and effective delivery of radiation as prescribed for patient care. Responsibilities include assisting with quality assurance tasks, performing routine equipment checks, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. Specific tasks involve the preparation of radiation treatment plans, such as image fusion and composite dosimetry, determining and validating delivered doses, and advancing procedures to ensure safe and efficient programs. Additionally, the assistant provides support to other healthcare professionals and evaluates radiation treatments to enhance the efficiency of medical physics operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist physicists and physics residents in their duties, including tasks in:
  • Quality assurance programs, including equipment, treatment plan, and treatment delivery;
  • Radiation measurements and field characterization;
  • Image processing, registrations, dose mapping, and composite dosimetry between prior and proposed radiation treatments;
  • Radiation treatment planning, contouring, and dose evaluation activities;
  • Safety and efficiency improvement efforts;
  • Acceptance testing, evaluation and commissioning of equipment, computer systems, software, algorithms, input data, and output;
  • Detailed task completion documentation;
  • Detailed task procedure documentation;
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's of Science or equivalent degree required, Master's of Science or Doctorate degree preferred. Degree must be in a physical science, engineering, or related discipline.

Experience: Experience in physics, other scientific laboratory, or scientific clinical support role is highly preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires sitting/standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling (distance: 1 - 2 miles/day), climbing (ladder, steps) and reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive). Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs.

This position may be exposed to electric current while working on electronic equipment, exposed to extreme temperatures in steam tunnels, and required to stand on different surfaces.

This position will remain open until filled. This is a full-time, benefited position.
