Job Description:

The Component & Configuration Engineer is an essential team member within the Hardware Engineering Team at IMAX, reporting to the Manager of Electrical Engineering. This role will work closely with the Electrical, Optical and Mechanical teams in Engineering, as well as cross functionally with Manufacturing, Procurement, Quality and Install teams to ensure parts being designed into our products are structured, organized and readily available as well as possess the necessary certifications.

The ideal candidate can efficiently synthesize enterprise-wide information to manage the selection and structuring of components subassemblies, and products. The role requires the candidate to stay current in component manufacturing trends and practices (semiconductors, passives, electrical, optical, mechanical & electro-mechanical components), and to keep a current understanding of the various component industry technology roadmaps.

The successful candidate has knowledge of requirements capture and experience in product development lifecycles, parts procurement cycles and component de-rating analysis. He/she will thrive in a dynamic engineering environment, with the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of exciting and challenging projects.

What You'll Do:
  • Design and maintain product BOM structures / configuration management
  • Maintain and improve PDM database
  • Research and provide guidance for component selection
  • Second-source components proactively and based on specific requests
  • Research Environmental Compliance (ROHS, WEEE, etc) and certifications for new and replacement components
  • Assist procurement with preliminary pricing, lead-time, and samples as required
  • Support external testing for part qualification of custom components
  • Support Operations for any component-related production issues (such as quality, obsolescence, shortages, discrepant material, etc.)
  • Support that assigned components, attributes, deliverables and/or processes comply with legal, safety and program requirements
  • Contribute to Make/Buy Decisions (produce in-house or buy)
  • Help prepare and process Engineering Change Requests (ECRs )
  • Provide support to Installation, Technical Services and Purchasing organizations
  • Balance short-term product delivery deadlines with long-term cost and efficiency goals
  • Adapt to the dynamic and evolving material supply chain ecosystem
  • Unify engineering and manufacturing product structure needs into an optimal solution
  • Advise on decisions related to obsolescence for components that require design changes
  • Actively contribute to project level decisions that have moderate impact on project or system costs
  • Day to day management of one's own and activities
  • Acceptance of RFDs from suppliers and NCR reviews with QA team that do not affect core design of products (no FFF or safety critical changes)
  • Cross functional design review assessment of system BOM and component selection
  • Selection of alternate components and management of obsolescence for system level components that do not require design changes (no FFF changes)
  • Help procurement of and streamline processes for PCB prototyping


What You'll Need:

  • BSE with experience in the electronics manufacturing industry or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes
  • Knowledge of procurement cycles and processes - off-the-shelf and custom
  • Experience in taking a product from design to releasing it into manufacturing
  • Experience with ISO9001, TQM and continuous improvement concepts
  • Experience with PLM systems
  • Experience with BOM management and / or configuration management
  • Familiarity with Silicon Expert or similar supply chain risk management tools
  • Experience with SAP or a similar PDM system
  • Experience with Component Engineering in a small to medium volume electronics manufacturing environment
  • Familiarity with various EN, UL, CSA, MIL and CE standards
  • Design validation process experience at both the component and system level
