About Our Job
Denver Parks & Recreation currently seeks dynamic and experienced professionals who enjoy working outdoors in urban Open Space and hybrid parks. This On-Call Open Space Technician position functions independently or as part of a team under the Open Space Program. Work will take place in a variety of terrains and weather conditions for the purpose of stewarding ecosystems in the urban environment; enhancing the resiliency, usability, and safety of those ecosystems; and environmental protection.
The On-Call Open Space Technician position is ideal for entry level and seasoned professionals with an educational background in ecology, environmental studies, natural resources, wildlife conservation, horticulture, forestry, arboriculture, or related disciplines and with experience in these fields and line of work. This position will be in the Denver metro area and work will be citywide.
This is an on-call position which will work no more than 39 hours per week and is not eligible for benefits. On-call positions may have routine or variable work schedules. The work schedule will generally be Monday-Thursday, 6:00AM-4:30PM.
This position will focus its responsibilities to manage the City's environmental assets. Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

This position will focus its responsibilities to manage the City's environmental assets. Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Steward 2,000+ acres of urban open spaces through native and invasive vegetation management, restoration, and ecologically sound practices.
- Identify, map, and manage plant populations using Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) principles.
- Maintain chemical application equipment and record pesticide applications.
- Safely operate a variety of hand tools and other landscape equipment.
- Participate in collaborative projects with other work units or volunteer groups
- Perform minor repairs to gardening and grounds equipment, vehicles, and machinery including repair or replacement of broken parts.
- Comply with the Colorado Noxious Weed Act (C.R.S. 35-5.5-101-119)
Our ideal candidate will have some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:
- Self-motivated, curious, and committed to production
- Comfortable working independently or in a team setting
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and work well with others
- Ability to work in varied terrain and inclement weather with flexible schedules (availability on weekends as needed)
- Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools.
- Ability to operate riding mowers, tractors, truck, trailers, and other landscape equipment.
- Ability to read maps and follow verbal and written direction
- At least a 2-year degree in open space management, environmental studies, wildlife conservation, noxious weed and vegetation management, forestry, horticulture, natural resources, resilient landscapes or in lieu of a degree, 3 years of experience in a closely related field
- Three (3) years of experience in the cultivation and care of a wide variety of ornamental/native plants OR horticultural/ecological restoration
- Competent computer skills in Microsoft Office applications
- Experience working with GIS integrated data collection software
- Education requirement: None

- Licensure: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
