2025 Analytical Research and Development Internship Overview

Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.

In collaboration, the Analytical R&D and Process Chemistry separation groups are seeking a highly motived intern to drive innovation within separation sciences. Chromatography is the workhorse analytical technique in pharmaceutical sciences and drug development. It supports nearly all functional areas and impacts all pipeline development projects yet chiral method development remains a time-consuming process. The intern will evaluate a machine learning (ML) driven workflow to identify optimal starting conditions from HPLC chiral method development.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Evaluating a machine learning model for a wide variety of diverse, pharmaceutically relevant chiral compounds
  • Compare the effectiveness of the model to typical full brute force screening in multiple chromatographic modes (RPLC, NPLC, SFC, and Polar Organic)
  • Assist in the design and implementation of a workflow to collect additional data to improve ML model performance

This internship will be based in North Chicago, IL.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in analytical chemistry or other related field
  • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship
  • Hands on experience in HPLC method development

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expected graduation date between December 2025 – July 2026
  • Understanding of chromatographic theory
  • Exposure to stereochemistry and/or chiral chromatographic separations
  • Python programming/modeling experience
