Purpose
Reporting to the Senior Financial & Administrative Officer and collaborating with the Central Business Service (CBS) team, the Financial Manager plays a pivotal role in business and financial analysis, offering insights and recommendations to optimize processes, reporting, and compliance across Academic Affairs units. The role provides strategic financial planning, data-driven reporting, and decision support to drive organizational efficiency. Key responsibilities include budgeting, account reconciliation, and the development of financial metrics and reports, while overseeing the CBS accounting team. The Financial Manager also ensures adherence to compliance standards and continuously improves business processes to meet both short- and long-term goals.

Responsibilities
Financial Management & Analysis - Oversee the Academic Affairs financial coding structure, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of internal accounting and reporting systems. Reconcile accounts, process accounting entries, and prepare monthly financial statements and reports. Provide oversight and tracking of account expenditures and commitments for units in Academic Affairs, including regular budget management and account reconciliations. Support various departments with financial inquiries and reporting needs. Interpret accounting data as it relates to revenues, expenses, and budgets, and analyze trends. Produce ad-hoc accounting, budget, HR-related, and operational statistical and financial analysis, as needed by CBS leadership. Assist and respond to financial inquiries from Academic Affairs units, and other various University back offices. This includes ad hoc analysis and reporting in support of Academdic Affairs departments.
Budgeting & Financial Planning - Support the development of financial and budgetary plans, collaborating with the Sr Financial & Administrative Officer and departmental managers to align financial strategies with departmental goals. Prepare and review budgets for departmental initiatives and external proposals, ensuring accuracy and suggesting alternatives where appropriate. Provide oversight and budget management for non-academic units reporting to Academic Affairs. Monitor expenditures and make adjustments as needed.
Reporting - Serve as an integral member of the Data & Analysis Project team, supporting the creation, development, implementation, and maintenance of key metrics, dashboards, and associated reporting. Monitor and analyze accounting, quality, and operational data to produce actionable financial reports and statements. Reconcile and prepare monthly financial statements and reports (unit financial P&L reports, scorecards). Maintain and update new and existing reports.
Supervision & Support - Manage and supervise the finance team, providing training, resources, and development opportunities. Conduct staff evaluations and align team goals with organizational objectives. Serve as the primary contact for reviewing and approving financial documents created by Academic Affairs units, providing consultative support as needed.
Administrative & Operational Support - Assist with the preparation of administrative, fiscal, personnel, and statistical reports for the CBS Accounting team. Manage inventory (tagged assets) for the Academic Affairs. Support special projects and serve as the primary contact for various administrative responsibilities.
Compliance & Process Development - Continuously evaluate and improve business processes to enhance efficiency and internal controls. Understand the department's business needs and prepare proposals that meet short and long-term objectives. Ensure compliance with University, state, and federal regulations. Serve as a subject matter expert on financial and compliance-related issues, providing guidance and training to staff.
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration. Five years of progressively responsible experience in finance or accounting with experience in planning, forecasting, and financial analysis. Experience effectively supervising employees. Experience working in a business service office and around associated functions (e.g., HR, Procurement, Accounting). Experience managing projects, including budgeting, timelines, and cross-functional team collaboration. Excellent oral and written communication skills, especially when conveying financial information. Ability to work as a member of a large, multifaceted, and collaborative team; proven track record of providing exceptional, consistent, and reliable customer service in a financial capacity. Extensive data analysis experience, reporting experience, and proficiency in Excel. Strong organization skills and attention to detail. Ability to collaborate effectively with staff and communicate effectively with staff, colleagues, leadership, and partners. Professional demeanor.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred QualificationsMore than six years experience in progressively responsible finance or accounting within a large R1 university setting. Experience supporting the financial operations of a large school/college/unit with multi-million dollar budgets. Working knowledge of university accounting and procurement policies and procedures. Experience working with data visualization (e.g., Tableau) and reporting tools (e.g., Cognos).
Salary Range$75,000 + depending on qualifications
