This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Geologist with an interest in geohazard identification and mitigation, field mapping, and soil/rock logging for our Wexford, PA office. Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client's objectives and solves their challenges.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable with the use of technology in the practice of geology and directing and working in the field with project teams to support geologic and geotechnical field assessments and subsurface investigations. This position will include opportunities on a variety of projects such as linear alignments for pipelines, transportation corridors, and infrastructure siting. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated education or field experience in geomorphology, geohazards, and geology of the Appalachian Basin. This senior position provides an opportunity to join a fast-paced team that provides solutions on geological, civil, and geotechnical engineering projects. The work entails a variety of office-related, project management, and outdoor "hands-on" activities, with a need to lead a team to both give and receive instructions, document activities, solve problems, and provide proactive communication.

Your Impact
• Work with project teams on geotechnical and geological engineering projects that involve field activities, site observations, data evaluation, and office work.
• Support and manage projects, with an emphasis on geohazard identification, investigation and mitigation; and geotechnical engineering, design, and monitoring.
• Prepare documents and review those prepared by junior staff, including engineering drawings, specifications, work plans and reports.
• Research and write technical reports summarizing geology with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation.
• Prepare data and visualizations such as geologic charts, soil analyses, modeling, maps geologic cross-sections, and other illustrations.
• Conduct or manage subsurface field geologic exploration tasks including advancement of boreholes, dynamic cone penetrometer testing, and test pit explorations and drilling activities for the installation of geotechnical instrumentation.
• Comple or review data, borehole logs, GIS data analysis.
• Collect or review a range of field data, including from geotechnical and slope monitoring instrumentation and GIS data, and field notes.
• Perform or review data compilations, borehole (and other) logs, GIS data analysis and management, site geology, and other related deliverables.
• Develop and assist with development and scoping of projects.
• Provide technical direction, oversight, mentoring, and training to junior-level staff in all aspects of project delivery.
• Interact with clients, including preparation for and participation in meetings, preparation of progress reports, proposals, and other correspondence, responding to client requests, and maintaining positive relationships.
• Support national and regional client programs for the various sectors through active participation with appropriate national and global technical teams.
• Contribute to the development and execution of business plans related to the growth of our sector services; provide market and industry insight and facilitate development of marketing strategies.
• Participate in identification of regional technical needs and recruiting for these skills in collaboration with senior colleagues.
• Prepare technical reports and presentations that explain research, findings, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or clean-up chemical and environmental problems and contamination.
• Oversee equipment/tool performance, calibration, troubleshooting of malfunctions, and inventory control.
• Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
• Comply with safety guidelines and client/site-specific procedures which may include safely plans, PPE, the maintenance of sample collection, location data, laboratory documentation, and logbooks.
• Complete training on assigned tasks.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree in geology or closely related discipline.
• 5 to 7 years of experience working as an engineering geologist.
• Knowledge of geological research techniques and protocols.
• Ability to coordinate with clients, colleagues, and third-party groups and understand requirements.
• Analytical mindset, detail oriented, and experience with geological research techniques required.
• Possess computer skills and have experience with computer software including Microsoft Office and basic data management applications. Possess geologic field skills and have experience in field mapping and identification of geologic hazards.
• Possess competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a professional and non-professional audience.
• Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
• Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
• Proficiency with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.
• Ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
• Ability to be comfortable in remote settings and a willingness to perform a variety of tasks as needed to complete an assignment.
• Local and potential national travel (up to 75% of the time) with possible opportunities for long-term assignments at project sites.
• Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening.

Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree in geology, engineering geology, or related field.
• Professional Geologist registration in Pennsylvania or ability to receive comity.
• Experience with geomorphology and surface processes.
• Experience in using GIS and remote sensing data (e.g., Lidar and aerial imagery) to identify geologic hazards using remote sensing data.
• Project management skills with experience leading teams on complex or multi-project programs.
• Client focus with experience in client management and effective project/program delivery skills.
• Possess strong verbal communication, writing, analytical, and organizational skills combined with a positive attitude and an ability to work both independently and within groups, including with technical peers across the company, client contacts, and subcontractors.
• Familiarity with geotechnical engineering practices and principles.
• Research skills with analytical mindset.
• A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
