Metallurgist Staff Specialist R&D - Product & Process Development

We are seeking an action-oriented, results-focused Metallurgist or Materials Engineer who is capable of leading projects and efforts to identify and develop products and processes to expand our portfolio of engineered materials. This individual is expected to have research experience in metallurgy and capability to develop into a leader in the technical organization. This individual will support the development of new alloys and product forms, develop new products, support the production mill on problem-solving related to materials science issues, and maintain the company as a leader in innovation of metallurgical solutions.

The Metallurgist Staff Specialist R&D - Product & Process Development Will...
  • Scale up new products and/or processes from lab to production scale by coordinating with Alloy Development, Production Metallurgy, Operations and Commercial.
  • Monitor technological advances and identify emerging technologies to expand our product portfolio to meet emerging customer needs.
  • Work with key stakeholders to connect unmet needs to technical solutions that meet those needs.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders throughout the development process to ensure alignment between product attributes and market needs.
  • Ensure development projects are completed on-time, on-budget, and to the desired specifications.
  • Scope out project needs, design experiments using standard experimental design techniques and use advanced techniques for material characterization and data analysis.
  • Perform research hands-on in a laboratory setting.
  • Lead and support multiple concurrent projects.
  • Interact with customers and internal business units to provide unique material solutions.
  • Support mill projects related to scale up and production of key alloys.
  • Interact with national laboratories, universities and industrial consortiums to jointly develop and evaluate new processes and materials.
  • Proactively drive & secure intellectual property
  • Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.
Requirements For The Metallurgist Staff Specialist R&D - Product & Process Development
  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or related field; Ph.D. preferred.
  • 5+ years of industrial experience or equivalent in specialty alloys. Experience with nickel-based alloys, cobalt-based alloys, alloy steels, stainless steels, electronic/magnetic alloys, or titanium is strongly preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, methods, characterization techniques and equipment is required.
  • Project management experience with the ability to lead teams is essential
  • Six Sigma and/or Lean Manufacturing training is a plus.
  • Candidate must have experience working in teams and must demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Possess the ability to work independently and effectively with employees at all levels is essential
  • Additional requirements include, but are not limited to excellent problem solving, decision-making and strong time-management and prioritization skills.
