We are seeking an Instrument & Controls Designer to join our team in Kirkland, WA, to lead and work on various I&C Designer and Power Industrial projects. Our Engineering group is looking for a full-time experienced Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Designer III to join our growing team. Under the direction of the project, I&C Lead Engineer, the Candidate will be responsible for technical accuracy, quality, and preparation of drawing packages within project budget and schedule requirements interfacing other engineering disciplines to particular area of expertise. Check systems for compliance to specifications and serve as liaison between engineers, designers, and drafters. The Candidate is responsible for supervising design and drafting functions to meet the project schedule while ensuring compliance with standards and specifications and budgetary requirements.

How will you contribute to the team?

Under the direction of Design Team members and/or engineers, the Candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:
  • Complete layout of I&C related engineering drawings based upon notes, sketches, vendor drawings, the Statement of Work (SOW) or Design Basis Document (DBD) and general direction. Drawings shall include, but not be limited to wiring diagrams, location plans, instrument installation details, junction box details, network architecture block diagrams, loop sheets.
  • Complete total project I&C design effort, through personal work or directing other Design Team personnel.
  • Ability to work on a project as Lead Designer. Schedule work of self and others to complete project design documents. Supervise a small design group to complete design packages on single project or handle several small projects at various stages of completion.
  • Check all work for compliance to contract Statement of Work.
  • Be able to work with minimum or no supervision to complete tasks. Requires minimum supervision to complete design of a full project from start to finish.
  • Check work of other members of the Design Team.
  • Track and schedule drawings. Assist in set up and monitoring of a drawing register.
  • Perform drafting work via AutoCAD (2D and 3D) or Revit (per project requirements).
  • Supervise placement or place 3D renderings of instrumentation items in the project plant wide 3D model utilizing SmartPlant 3D software to ensure correctness of location and interference checking.
  • Utilizing Instrumentation design software, catalog instrumentation information for reporting purposes.
  • Under the direction of I&C Engineering personnel, perform limited engineering functions to produce project related deliverables.
  • Mentor Design Team members to produce job specific instrument installation details using developed standard details as required and maintain documentation for files.
  • Provide information to other designers on interface requirements (i.e., equipment spacing, cable numbering, instrument numbering, control philosophy, flow element requirements, etc.)
  • Check vendor and other discipline drawings against own or other designed work for correctness, utilizing PDM or SharePoint software packages.
  • Mentor Design Team members to produce material take-offs for bulk commodities from completed engineering documents.
  • Provide on-site and/or remote project Instrumentation support to Construction and Start Up personnel as required.
  • Maintain project files of previous revisions per ISO 9001 policies.

What will you contribute?

The ideal Candidate should have the following skills, knowledge, qualifications, and experience (as a minimum):
  • AA in drafting or AS degree in Instrumentation / Industrial Automation or equivalent from a qualified technical school is required.
  • Previous experience as an Instrument and Controls Designer, with six or more years of industrial or power plant design experience, or equivalent.
  • Comprehensive understanding of instrument types and their installation procedures.
  • Thorough understanding of documentation and document control procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
  • Proficient in computer software applications such as Microsoft Office.
  • Strong understanding of mathematics, including algebra and trigonometry, is required.
  • Have a strong knowledge of drafting and design standards and techniques in the area of electrical, mechanical, piping, structural or instrumentation drafting.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, having AutoCAD 2D and 3D training and be able to use standard AutoCAD system tools.
  • Proficient with the SmartPlant Software Suite (SPI, SPPID, SP3D). Experience as a SmartPlant Administrator is a plus but not required.
  • Have strong knowledge of NEC requirements and standard drafting symbols, including ISA and SAMA.
  • Have a strong knowledge of AutoCAD drafting standards including Paper Space / Model Space and adhering to Company drafting standards.
  • Have a thorough understanding electronics, electrical design, solid state, digital devices, programmable logic controllers (PLC), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), transmitters and transducers for temperature, level, flow, and pressure, recorders and more.
  • Ability to interpret and understand P&IDs (Process and Instrumentation Diagrams) and incorporate into the I&C design.

  • Have the ability to work independently with moderate supervision upon assignment of tasks. Will require some technical and/or procedural help.
  • Be highly motivated, proactive and show a focused approach to the tasks at hand.

Working Conditions:
  • AtkinsRéalis has implemented a hybrid work model and flex place, allowing the job duties and responsibilities to be performed in both a traditional office environment as well as telecommuting from a remote location. In the office environment, the position generally involves continuous sitting; frequent standing; frequent walking; light to moderate lifting; light carrying; frequent bending and reaching; keyboarding and telephone operation.
  • The office environmental conditions generally include ambient inside temperature, lighting, and noise levels. Conditions may also include automobile and/or airplane transport as well as plant site inspections. May require an irregular work schedule with extended periods of travel and overtime hours.

Expected compensation range is between $35.00 - $52.00 hourly depending on skills, experience, and geographical location.
