JOB SUMMARY:
The Controller position is a key management position of the finance team responsible for all accounting activities for Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. This position ensures the financial integrity of the organization in all recording, reporting, and analysis to a variety of stakeholders. Key stakeholders including internal audiences such as the board of directors, executive and management teams, and Goodwill Industries International. Externally, this position is responsible for all audit, tax, and donor compliance activities. The Controller works closely with the CFO and budget managers to support budgeting, reporting, and analysis to support strong financial performance and growth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts receivable, and financial reporting. Partners closely with Manager of Accounts Payable and Payroll for operations functions.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for the board, executive team, and stakeholders.
- Monitor cash flow, prepare cash flow forecasts, and manage organizational liquidity.
- Prepares and submits monthly financial reporting to Goodwill Industries International.
Financial Planning & Analysis
- Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department heads and executive leadership.
- Provide variance analysis to identify and explain budgetary variances.
- Assist with long-term financial planning and strategy development.
- Performs standard and ad hoc financial analysis, including tracking of Key Performance Indicators (KPI's), alongside decision support functions.
Compliance & Audit
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations, including IRS regulations for non-profits.
- Manage the annual audit process, coordinating with external auditors to ensure timely completion. Audits include Financial Statement Audit, Single Audit for Federal Grant Compliance, 401K/403B plan audits, and donor financial monitoring reviews.
- Prepare and submit necessary tax filings, such as 990, and other regulatory reports.
Grants & Restricted Funds Management
- Track and report on grant funds and restricted contributions, ensuring proper allocation and compliance with donor requirements.
- Work with development teams to provide financial input for grant proposals and budget tracking.
Internal Controls & Process Improvement
- Develop, document, and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard assets.
- Recommend and implement process improvements to streamline financial operations and enhance reporting accuracy.
Team Leadership & Development
- Manage and mentor finance team staff, providing training and support for professional development.
- Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and performance evaluations for accounting team members.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field required
- 5-7 years of related work experience required. A mix of for-profit and non-profit experience is highly preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) preferred

- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
