The Energy group of Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. is seeking qualified candidates for a Principal Electrical Engineer position supporting our operations in the Western United States.

As a Principal Electrical Engineer your primary role will be to support project execution as a project manager, project technical lead, electrical lead, and discipline engineer for a variety of projects with varying size and complexity. You will participate in the evaluation, recommendation, and specification for engineered systems or products for a project verifying compliance with applicable codes and engineering standards/practices. You will maintain relations with current and future clients within our Energy business line. You must be a hands-on problem solver willing to work through issues as they arise with staff, clients, offices, disciplines, and projects. You must also foster effective working relationships between colleagues, associates, clients, and officials. You will work primarily in the hydropower and water resource sectors.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Working with a multi-discipline group of engineers and technicians providing lead electrical engineering services to public and private sector clients including supervision of a project team, design work, field work, and project management activities.
  • Providing lead electrical engineering support or project management for development of new hydroelectric projects and rehabilitation of existing hydroelectric facilities including: electrical power and control systems for water control structures such as dams, spillways, intakes and outlets, pipelines, penstocks; generators and excitation systems; generator auxiliary systems; generator buses; generator circuit breakers; unit step-up transformers; power plant high voltage switchyards and substations; balance of plant electrical systems such as medium and low voltage switchgear, motor control centers, DC battery systems, backup generators, etc.; protection and control systems; grounding and lighting systems, fire protection systems.
  • Design and preparation of technical specifications and drawings in CADD (AutoCAD).
  • Plan, organize, and manage the production of project deliverables to ensure on time delivery, technical quality, and within budget.
  • Serve as the project's point of contact with clients, agencies, and others to obtain and determine project requirements and approvals.
  • Support proposal development and other business development activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Comply with all company, Federal, and project site policies and procedures.
  • Follow Stantec and client safe work practices and adhere to all company guidelines and policies for planning and executing work in a safe manner.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • In depth knowledge of standards and codes involved in design and installation of electrical equipment, including US based standards and IEC equivalents. In depth knowledge of US National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) is preferred, plus familiarity with National Electrical Safety Code (ANSI C2) and arc flash standards.
  • Experience with hydro generator rehabilitation or similar industry experience with large rotating equipment (such as steam turbines, pumps, or pump-motors, etc.), controls and protective relay systems, medium and low voltage switchgear, and high voltage switchyards and substations.
  • Experience designing SCADA systems.
  • Experience with Schematic and Wiring diagram design
  • Self-motivated
  • Experience with AutoCAD preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel required; experience with Microsoft Project is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.


Education and Experience
    • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, with emphasis in planning for power and control systems on hydropower or similar industry facilities. Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering is a plus. Master of Business Administration degree is a plus.
    • Project Management Institute - Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
    • At least 25 years total relevant Experience.
  • P.E. License preferred.
