The AZEK Company’s intern/co-op program will provide you with hands-on experience in controls engineering and advanced manufacturing and engineering concepts, as well as exposure to the fascinating world of sustainable outdoor building products.

This is a paid internship where you will report directly to the Senior Manager of Controls Engineering. Throughout your time with The AZEK Company, you can expect to participate in meaningful project work and professional learning opportunities that will help you grow technical skills and abilities as a future engineering professional.

During your time with AZEK, you will also get exposure to, and an opportunity to network with, other interns, AZEK employees, and company executives.

Time Commitment & Expectations:

  • AZEK’s summer Intern program runs from May 19th, 2025 – August 8th, 2025. Participants must be available for at least 11 out of the 12 weeks.
  • Program runs for 40 hours/week, with the exception of the week of Memorial Day & Independence Day (unpaid holidays)
  • Participants must be available for two in person events
    • Wilmington, OH week of June 2nd
    • Chicago, IL the week of July 21st or 28th
  • Weekly Lunch & learns 45-90 minutes

Travel Requirement(s): 10%

Position Summary: The Controls Engineering Intern will support the continuous operation and optimization of a high-volume, 24/7 blending and extrusion facility. Working within a complex control system environment that includes a robust Distributed Control System (DCS), multiple servers, and hundreds of PLCs from various manufacturers, the intern will assist with data acquisition, troubleshooting, and maintenance tasks. The primary project will involve configuring data historization and real-time dashboarding through AspenTech, using Kepware and OPC-UA. This role provides hands-on experience with industrial automation, data systems, and critical problem-solving within a fast-paced manufacturing setting.

What you can expect:

  • System Monitoring and Troubleshooting: Expect daily checks on PLCs, servers, and the DCS to identify and troubleshoot any connectivity, control, or hardware issues, ensuring production runs smoothly.
  • Data Collection and Integrity Checks: Regularly review and verify data flows through Kepware, OPC-UA, and AspenTech to maintain data accuracy and resolve any discrepancies that could impact reporting.
  • Documentation and Maintenance: Assist with updating documentation on PLC configurations, network topology, and hardware/software licenses, while also participating in maintenance of spare parts and backups.

What you’ll learn:

  • Industrial Data Acquisition and OPC-UA Protocols: Learn the mechanics of data collection from PLCs to dashboards, understanding the role of OPC-UA and Kepware in industrial data transfer and historization.
  • Data Historization and Dashboarding in AspenTech: Gain hands-on experience with setting up and configuring dashboards to visualize production metrics and trends, essential for process optimization.
  • PLC Systems and Controls Management: Develop a working knowledge of managing PLCs from multiple manufacturers, including troubleshooting, code management, and working within a distributed control environment.

Ideal Student:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student studying Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Chemical Engineering at an accredited college or university
  • High academic standing (Preferred GPA – 3.0+)
  • Successful completion of a minimum of 60 credit hours
  • Able to participate in at least 90% of the program May – August
  • Willing to relocate to a geographic location with an AZEK facility, if needed, upon graduation.

Students must be eligible to work in the U.S. without immigration sponsorship.
