Description
Sargent & Lundy's Government Services Division provides cutting-edge engineering design and consulting support to the management and operating contractors for US Department of Energy (DOE) sites and national laboratories. Specifically, we support the DOE Environmental Management Directorate as well as the National Nuclear Security Administration laboratories and sites. What does this mean? You can be a part of multi-discipline design teams supporting projects cleaning up the environmental damage associated with the legacy nuclear weapons production complex and/or preserving our country's nuclear deterrent. Sargent & Lundy's personnel design facilities, systems, and equipment that treat, store, and dispose of nuclear waste as well as systems that safely handle and process nuclear material. You will utilize your academic background to conduct the design of processes on both new and modified systems. In addition, evaluations and reviews of both new and existing energy and industrial facilities to prepare comprehensive reports and calculations in support of assessing proposed system designs, upgrades, modifications, and equipment/system replacements.

You will utilize your academic background to conduct the design of processes on both new and modified systems. - The position will offer you the opportunity to expand your knowledge of engineering and process systems, and to work with multi-disciplined project teams to:
- Evaluate and review the design of energy and industrial processes projects for the energy and industrial market.
- Prepare preliminary engineering studies for modifying and retrofitting design projects on new and existing energy and industrial facilities.
- Analyze technical issues, prepare accompanying system specification data, and present your findings and proposals to clients and peers.
- Support Sargent & Lundy's active role in the United States' national security efforts.
- As a member of the team, you will be responsible for:
- Establishing work priorities daily for multiple projects and responding to requests from project managers.
- Preparation of engineering calculations / analyses, design drawings, and engineering reports,
- Preparation of calculations using chemical inventories of waste tanks (Best-Basis Inventory), using sample data, process knowledge, and model data.
- Developing an understanding of radiation shielding in support of nuclear facility clients with a goal of being able to perform shielding analyses in MicroShield and Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) software codes.
- Developing the ability to perform system reliability analysis using fault trees, event trees, and reliability block diagrams using BlockSim or similar software.
- Working towards obtaining a professional engineering license.
- Developing an understanding and work under an NQA-1 quality assurance program.
- Support hazard and safety analyses to ensure the safe operation and design of nuclear facilities and systems.
- Conduct risk assessments and develop strategies to mitigate potential hazards associated with nuclear operations and projects.
- Maintaining and enhancing your knowledge and understanding of industry standards and specifications, process system design, and new technology developments.
- Participating in industry code committees and conferences.
- Support the development of nuclear and radiological readiness exercise programs for domestic and foreign partners utilizing seminars, workshops, table top exercises, full scale exercises and evaluation systems;
- Provides technical support in nuclear operations, nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear security and develops and/or delivers technical training and/or exercises to S&L clients.
- Provide program management support, technical, planning, and other support on tasks related to nuclear operations, nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear security, physical security and vulnerability assessments.
- Developing your career via peer learning and knowledge sharing with other engineers and participating in S&L's System of Processes and our associated "Communities of Practice."
Additional opportunities will include:
- Receiving training and mentorship from experienced engineers in the execution of meaningful project engineering assignments.
- Traveling to client and/or vendor offices for consulting, design reviews, and field verification of designs.
Qualifications

Essential skills and experience:
- This position requires a BS in Nuclear Engineering or MS in Nuclear Engineering from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program with a strong academic background
- Ten or more years of experience in a nuclear related field
- An understanding of the practical application of nuclear engineering and technologies.
- Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail
- Ability to quickly identify and prioritize issues, create solutions, and meet deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with MS Office applications
- Experience with nuclear materials/wastes and their associated processes
- Familiarity with 10 CFR Part 830 - Nuclear Safety Management and Department of Energy Standards.
Valued but not required skills and experience:
- Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and designation as an Engineer-in-Training
- Prior, related experience is preferred
- Knowledge of the following programs: MicroShield and MCNP
- Familiarity with major federal regulatory programs such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
- Current Security Clearance
