Your Opportunity
Stantec's (formally Teshmont Consultants LP) Winnipeg office is looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to be a Technical Lead in the area of Power System Studies. This includes, building a team to support study projects internationally and grow the practice of Power System Studies. The technical lead will also be a key player in setting the strategic direction for power system studies by keeping up to date with current and emerging industry trends and directions.

This position is responsible for business development, client relations, technical proposal preparation, as well as managing and overseeing technical teams in the delivery of detailed power system studies projects.
Your Key Responsibilities
Operations
  • Provide project leadership on system studies projects. The work includes interface with clients, directing work of system studies team, preparation of final report.
  • Provide technical support to projects. The work includes all aspects of project delivery including developing study methodology, optimizing delivery of services and preparation, final review, implementing quality control and issuing of reports.
  • Responsible for ensuring that high quality project deliverables are delivered in a timely manner, to meet project schedules and budgets.
  • Perform power system studies, including but not limited to power flow and stability studies ranging from transmission planning, load and generation interconnection, integration of renewables, distribution network optimization, etc.
  • Prepare simulation study cases for power flow and short-circuit analysis, transient and dynamic simulations as well as EMTP studies

Business Development/Client Relations
  • Participate in corporate marketing and business development activities related to power system studies.
  • Preparation of proposals including development of methodology, staffing requirements and labor and expense cost estimates.
  • Manage client relations with respect to business development activities and work assignments.
  • Manage research and development activities associated with power system studies and new technologies and/or innovative study techniques, modelling and simulation.
  • Grow and develop a network of industry connections within the power system global community.
  • Participate in IEEE, CIGRE, IEC or other international organizations.
  • Write papers and give presentations at technical conferences.

Leadership/Management
  • Provide technical advice, guidance and mentorship to technical team members.
  • Provide input regarding technical training requirements and opportunities.
  • Ensure efficient use of time in the application of project delivery and in times of low workload.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Experience interacting with internal and external clients.
  • Ability to get things done on-time and within the project deadlines while maintaining a high standard of quality.
  • Self-motivated collaborator that can also work as a successful independent researcher.
  • Self-starter able to work independently with minimal or no supervision and ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven written and verbal English language communication skills.
  • Spoken and written technical communication skills in other languages are considered an asset.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and provide creative, quick - and reliable - solutions to complex problems.
  • Expert level experience in power system studies conducting power flow and dynamic stability studies along with proven experience in other aspects of power transmission, distribution and/or generation.
  • Expert user of PSSE (including use of Python).
  • Strong background in other power system analysis software including PowerFactory, ETAP, CYME, DSATools, openDSS, PSCAD etc.
  • Strong background in HVDC transmission and inverter based generation technology and study requirements.
  • Strong background in static and dynamic modelling of power systems components including HVDC, VSC, Static Var Compensators, STATCOM and Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitors.
  • International experience completing power system planning studies is an asset.
  • Expert understanding of North American power systems, associated standards and regulations such as NERC TPL standards.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office including Word and Excel.
  • Willingness to travel internationally.
Education and Experience
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, PhD is preferred.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng and/or PE) is required.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience as an electrical engineer, with focus on power system studies.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
